This Week on GR

High dudgeon has been the major tenor of the response from the far north to the imminent ascension of Donald J. Trump as next president of the United States of America. How, the doyens across our famously liberal media spectrum wonder, could our good cousins south let it happen?

It goes without saying, (just a year after Stephen Harper's departure) such a gauche coup could never happen here; Canadians are far too fair and good to allow a low brow, knuckle-dragging orange-haired troglodyte troll like the Donald take the reins of power.

Yes, from climate policy to world peace Canada is, if not the indispensable, then at least an unimpeachable nation; or is it?

Listen. Hear.

Yves Engler is a Canadian author and essayist whose book titles include: 'The Ugly Canadian — Stephen Harper’s Foreign Policy,' 'Lester Pearson’s Peacekeeping — The Truth May Hurt,' 'Stop Signs — Cars and Capitalism on the Road to Economic, Social and Ecological Decay (with Bianca Mugyenyi),' and the 'The Black Book of Canadian Foreign Policy' (Shortlisted for the Mavis Gallant Prize for Non Fiction in the Quebec Writers’ Federation Literary Awards), among others.

His latest book, 'A Propaganda System: How Canada’s Government, Corporations, Media and Academia Sell War and Exploitation' is hot of the press, and Yves will be up here at UVic November 16th at 7pm in the Harry Hickman Building to launch the book and reveal just why "most Canadians believe their country is a force for good in the world, despite a long history of supporting empire, racism and exploitation."

And; even when war is a game, its weapons aren't toys. Just off our coast, the American Navy conducts war games and weapons testing using sophisticated and necessarily lethal systems and ordnance. But, some of that ordnance, the bullets, bombs, and shells pose an unintended hazard to life and limb, one the military brass is unwilling to admit.

Dahr Jamail is an Olympic peninsula-based Truthout staff journalist and author, whose book titles include: 'The Will to Resist: Soldiers Who Refuse to Fight in Iraq and Afghanistan,' 'Beyond the Green Zone: Dispatches from an Unembedded Journalist in Iraq,' and the contributed chapter, "Killing the Intellectual Class" for the anthology, 'Cultural Cleansing in Iraq: Why Museums Were Looted, Libraries Burned and Academics Murdered.'

In his latest article for Truthout, 'The Navy's Use of Depleted Uranium in Our Coastal Waters Threatens Humans, Wildlife' Jamail uncovers the hidden threat behind the Navy's war games in our back yard. Dahr is also a Truthout staff reporter, and his latest book, 'The Mass Destruction of Iraq: Why It Is Happening, and Who Is Responsible' is co-written with Truthout founding editor, William Rivers Pitt.

Dahr Jamail and deep sixing the Navy's deadly games in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher emeritus and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us newz of some of the good things planned in the coming week for our city's streets and beyond. But first, Yves Engler and 'A Propaganda System: How Canada’s Government, Corporations, Media and Academia Sell War and Exploitation.'
