Assassination of a Saint: the plot to murder Oscar Romero

and the quest to bring his killers to justice.

On March 24, 1980, the assassination of El Salvador’s Archbishop ├ôscar Romero rocked that nation and the world. Despite the efforts of many in El Salvador and beyond, those responsible for Romero’s murder were never punished for their heinous crime.

Assassination of a Saint is the thrilling story of an international team of lawyers, private investigators, and human-rights experts that fought to bring justice for the slain hero more than two decades after his death.

In this gripping narrative, Matt Eisenbrandt recounts how he and his colleagues interviewed witnesses and former members of death squads while searching for evidence on the conspirators and those who financed them. As the team worked towards the only court verdict ever reached for the martyred archbishop’s murder, they uncovered information with implications for El Salvador and the United States to this day.

Books for sale at the event.
About the author:
Matt is the legal director of the Canadian Centre for International Justice (CCIJ). He has led CCIJ’s casework since 2008. He is currently based in CCIJ’s British Columbia office, with a particular focus on our corporate accountability work as a member of the legal teams in the lawsuits against Nevsun Resources and Tahoe Resources. He previously served as the Legal Director for the Center for Justice & Accountability (CJA), a U.S.-based non-profit that also works to prevent torture and other severe human rights abuses by helping survivors hold perpetrators accountable through legal cases. He was CJA’s lead counsel in federal trials against military commanders from El Salvador and Haiti, as well as a lawsuit against a former Air Force captain for his role in the murder of beloved Salvadoran Archbishop, Oscar Romero. Matt is the author of Assassination of a Saint, a book about the murder of Archbishop Romero and CJA’s investigation of Romero’s killers.

Note: There will be a second book launch with Matt Eisenbrant at Cafe Simpatico (1923 Fernwood) on March 31st at 8 pm in honour of Oscar Romero Day.
