The Hip War Booster: A Study of Propaganda in Action

Nobody Sets Out To Become A War Propagandist. It Just Sort Of Happens

by Caitlin Johnstone - Rogue Journalist

January 31, 2020

Senior Huffington Post UK editor Chris York has published what is by my count his twelfth smear piece against a small group of academics and independent journalists who’ve expressed skepticism of establishment Syria narratives.

York’s obsessive deluge of hit pieces revolve around British academics Tim Hayward and Piers Robinson, as well as independent journalist Vanessa Beeley. Every word in this sentence hyperlinks to a different article smearing them.

Patrick Henningsen & George Galloway on OPCW Douma Leaks and Julian Assange Extradition

OPCW Douma Leaks and Why Julian Assange Extradition Will Affect Everyone

by George Galloway - MOATS

via 21st Century Wire

January 29, 2020

This week, 21WIRE editor Patrick Henningsen appeared on #MOATS television and radio show with host George Galloway, to discuss two important stories from last week – the presentation of the OPCW Douma Leaks at the UK House of Commons, and the extradition case of Julian Assange at Westminster Courts in London. Both stories feature governments lying to cover-up real war crimes. History does indeed repeat itself.

Canada's Media Witch-Hunters Burning Whistleblowers at the Stake

How Canada’s corporate media smeared WikiLeaks publisher and journalist Julian Assange

by Roger Jordan  - WSWS

30 January 2020

Since WikiLeaks began a decade ago to publish secret US cables exposing many of the war crimes and imperialist intrigues perpetrated by Washington and its allies around the world, Canada’s corporate-controlled media outlets have made the whistleblowing website and its founder, Julian Assange, the target of a smear campaign.

Assange makes statement from Ecuadorian Embassy Balcony

Newspapers—ranging from the “liberal” Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail, the Canadian elite’s supposed “newspaper of record,” to the neoconservative National Post —have vilified Assange as a manipulative, self-obsessed monster who supports dictators, while bemoaning the adverse impact of WikiLeaks’ exposures on the global interests of American and Canadian imperialism.

Paris Is Burning: Macron's Riot Police Turn Batons on Firefighters

France: Riot Police Beat up Striking Firefighters as Media Looks the Other Way

by Alan MacLeod - MintPress News

January 29, 2020

The media, quick to condemn violence against protesters elsewhere in the world, largely ignored the brutal crackdown on firefighters joining months-long nationwide protests in France.

Truncheons rain down on fallen protestors as masked, black-clad riot police brutalize firefighters striking in full uniform, looking distinctly similar to their peers in the police, except that they are not carrying weapons. That was the scene that few in the world saw this week, as media largely ignored firefighters joining the months-long nationwide protests against President Emmanuel Macron and his attempts to make sweeping changes to French society.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, John Walker, Eva Bartlett, Janine Bandcroft January 30, 2020

This Week on GR

by C. L. Cook -

January 30, 2020

Before listening to today's program, a warning: human communication in this medium, radio is made of words and music. We welcome all tongues, idioms, and strains of both here at CFUV. But, and it's an enormous but; there are those who find "natural language", that is to say the way people actually communicate with each other, so offensive they would make an offence of it.

We'll be talking about them, and others like them today, in the rude, crude, and necessarily scatalogical lingua franca favoured by the hoi polloi. You've been warned!

Assholes; you know them. You probably have to deal with one or more almost every day. Perhaps you're one yourself; and certainly, truth be told, haven't we all been on at least one occasion? It's just natural.

        Listen. Here.

But, even though you've known some doozies in your time, you're likely not aware of the vast array and dazzling plentitude of the genus; or realize the profound effect assholes, both singly and collectively, have on all of our lives.

John Walker is an award-winning Canadian documentary filmmaker. He's a multi-Donald Brittain Award nominee and co-founder of the Documentary Organization of Canada, advocates for, and foremost voice of the nation's community of independent documentary film creators. The producer, writer, cinematographer, and director has made films on both sides of the Atlantic, and his titles include: 'Quebec My Country Mon Pays, 'Arctic Defenders', 'A Drummer's Dream', and the Canadian dramatic classic, 'A Winter Tan'. Walker's latest is, 'Assholes: A Theory', inspired by the Aaron James' best-selling book of the same title.

John Walker in the first half.

And; it's been almost two years since that April morning when Donald Trump let fly more than fifty Tomahawk cruise missiles into Syria. The bombardment was meant as a demonstration to Syria's president, Bashir al-Assad of America's resolve in answering Assad's alleged chemical attack against Al Qaeda affiliated forces in Douma. But the story was suspect from the beginning. Now, the narrative spun by the US and its ally in this subterfuge, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has unraveled, with whistleblowers inside the OPCW saying their report on the attack was corrupted.

Eva Bartlett is an independent Canadian journalist and activist who has lived in and reported extensively from Gaza and Syria over the last decade. She's been one of the few Western witnesses to the destruction of war from where the missiles and bombs land, and one of even fewer to fix properly the blame on the Western powers responsible. I spoke to Eva in April of 2018, as she was preparing for another foray into Syria.

Eva Bartlett and back to Syria in the second half.

And; Victoria activist and CFUV Radio broadcaster at large, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with some of what’s good to do in and around our town in the coming week. But first, John Walker and Assholes: A Theory.
Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Thursday between 11-Noon Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, and on the internet at:  He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, Check out the GR blog at:

Pipes & Dreams: The Clamour for Control of Europe's Hydrocarbon Supply

Pipeline or a Pipedream: Israel, Turkey Hydrocarbon Conflict is Brewing in the Mediterranean

by Ramzy Baroud - Palestine Chronicle

January 28, 2020

Massive natural gas discoveries off the eastern coast of Israel and Palestine is slated to make Tel Aviv a regional energy hub. Whether Israel will be able to translate positive indicators of the largely untapped gas reserves into actual economic and strategic wealth is yet to be seen. What is certain, however, is that the Middle East is already in the throes of a major geostrategic war, which has the potential of becoming an actual military confrontation.

Unsurprisingly, Israel is at the heart of this growing conflict.

“Last week, we started to stream gas to Egypt. We turned Israel into an energy superpower,” Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, bragged during a cabinet meeting on January 19.

Stopping the Press(es): Greenwald Becomes Latest Inconvenient Truth-Teller Targeted

Snowden Warns Targeting of Greenwald and Assange Shows Governments 'Ready to Stop the Presses—If They Can'

by Jessica Corbett - Common Dreams

January 27, 2020

"The most essential journalism of every era is precisely that which a government attempts to silence. These prosecutions demonstrate that they are ready to stop the presses—if they can."

In an op-ed published Sunday night by the Washington Post, National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden connected Brazilian federal prosecutors' recent decision to file charges against American investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald to the U.S. government's efforts to prosecute WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Consortium News and Chrystia: Where the Truth Lies, (and liars reveal the truth)

by John Helmer - Dances with Bears

January 26, 2020

The truth is that Consortium News trusted a Russian entity named the Strategic Culture Foundation and a Ukrainian reporter called Arina Tsukanova for a story published on February 27, 2017, about Chrystia Freeland’s grandfather Mikhail Chomiak, a propagandist and spy for the German Army who advocated and assisted in the murder of the Jews, Poles and Russians during World War II, and took his reward by stealing Jewish property – publishing company, office, apartment, antique furniture, and limousine.

The story about Freeland and the ethnic cleansing of Ukraine on which Freeland agrees, still, with Chomiak, was the truth. It’s also a truth she tries to escape by blaming the Russian state or Kremlin propaganda for repeating. Repeating doesn’t turn the truth into a lie, though as Joseph Goebbels advised, repeating the lie helps.
