This Week on GR
by C. L. Cook - Gorilla-Radio.com
From Brazil to Egypt, to the Indignadoes of Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, and Ireland to the Springs seething throughout the Arab nations, to Occupied America and the Indigenous Idle No More movement the message is clear for those with ears to hear: The time for real change is now, and it will be brought to fruition with or without the political class' apostles of Hope.Nowhere is this more evident than in Quebec's 2012 student uprising, where protest against the lifting of tuition freezes erupted into a full-scale civil movement that helped bring down the disengaged government of Jean Charest, and instructed others engaged in challenging government on how to break through the increasingly entrenched Corporate/State power nexus.
Listen. Hear.
Stefan Christoff is a Montreal-based writer, community organizer, musician and publisher of the just release, 'Le Fond de l’air est Rouge,' an anthology of texts about Quebec's Spring, Winter, Spring, and Summer of discontent, written from the streets and cafes and produced in collaboration with Rabble.ca, Media Co-op, and Al Jazeera. Stefan will be in Victoria this Wednesday at 7pm for a book launch at Camas Books that promises to explore, among other things: "[T]he syndicalisme de combat (combative union organization) that was so central to the Quebec student uprising; what lessons can be learned from Quebec student struggles; and, what the Quebec student uprising means for progressive forces in a Conservative Canada."

And; last year, wild salmon crusader, Don Staniford faced defamation charges brought against him in British Columbia's courts. Norwegian fish farm giant Cermaq's subsidiary, Mainstream Canada took exception to Staniford's pointed condemnation of the industry, and said his graphic website depictions comparing their product to cancer causing tobacco, among other things, was an actionable offense. Staniford won the case, sort of, and Mainstream appealed. Today, more than a year after receiving his not guilty verdict, (and an immediate deportation from Canada) the verdict in the appeal case (came down/is expected) from BC's appellant court. Don is currently Honeymooning in Europe, so I daren't intrude on that, but I did speak with him last year about the case, before the not guilty verdict was passed down.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with some of what's good to do in and around Victoria City. But first, Stefan Christoff on Red Squares, Casseroles and the other necessary ingredients to make successfully democratic struggle.
