Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Georgia Collins, Kevin Gallagher, Janine Bandcroft Sept 2, 2013

This Week on GR

by C. L. Cook - Gorilla-Radio.com

It's been almost a year since the American muckraking journalist, Barrett Brown's arrest by the FBI. As well as his articles, published at mainstream sites like Vanity Fair, the Guardian, and The Huffington Post, Brown was too for a time an information conduit for the online hacktivist collective, Anonymous.

It was likely this connection that raised his profile with the feds; that and his role in creating Project PM, an independent think-tank and wiki set up to dissect and disseminate the thousands of files retrieved from the private security contractor HBGary. Brown is still held in federal custody, waiting without bail for the commencement of his trial on charges that could see him put away for more than a century.

Listen. Hear.

Kevin M. Gallagher is a Massachusetts-based writer, musician, and systems administrator. He's also the director and founder of Free Barrett Brown, a coalition of concerned citizens who see in Brown's case an imminent danger to the freedom of us all, and threat to all our freedoms. Free Barrett Brown.org is currently trying to raise funds for Barrett's legal defense, and working to keep his case in the media spotlight.

Kevin M. Gallagher and the strange case of Barrett Brown in the first half.

And; residents of Shawnigan Lake and the surrounding area have fought the proposed use of South Island Aggregate's former gravel pit as a toxic waste receptacle since the scheme was first announced. It seemed the project was sure to fail, given the overwhelming opposition to it from all sides, but BC's Environment Ministry okay-ed the plan last month anyway. It's a multi-generational deal that will direct millions of tons of Victoria's toxic waste stream up and over the Malahat for the next 50 years or so. But as any school child can tell you: "What goes up must come down."

Georgia Collins is Executive Director of the Shawnigan Basin Society and Co-Chairs the Shawnigan Watershed Roundtable. She and a hundreds of her neighbours have campaigned against the proposed dump site for months and are now regrouping to see what can be done about the Ministry of Environment's imprimatur on this dangerous plan.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with some of the good things, and otherwise, we can get up to in and around the city and beyond in the coming week. But first, Georgia Collins and greenlighting a toxic dump site in the Shawnigan Lake headwaters.
