If November was the "stepping off" point, then December is the "hurtling towards the hard landing" of January's Trump presidency. Libertarians, and what remains of the Left who took cold comfort in the candidate's expressed wish to draw in America's military talons must today be nervously eyeing Mr. T.'s Manhattan aerie as one after another military man is added to his foreign policy cast of hawks; even as the bellicose Commander-in-Chief to be runs roughshod over diplomatic norms and protocol niceties.

Melvin A. Goodman is an essayist and author whose articles are featured online at such "usefully idiotic" sites as Consortium News, GlobalResearch, and CounterPunch.org, where he serves as in-house national security columnist.

Mel is too a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy, and professor of government at Johns Hopkins University.

A former CIA analyst, Goodman's book titles include: 'Failure of Intelligence: The Decline and Fall of the CIA,' 'National Insecurity: The Cost of American Militarism,' and his latest, 'A Whistleblower at the CIA: An Insider's Account of the Politics of Intelligence'. His recent article at CounterPunch, 'Trump’s Campaign of Militarization' may prove a splash of cold water in the face of hopes for a Trump ebb in America's militarist tide.

And; while "fake news" is in the news lately, you may have missed investigative reports on the Secretary of State's office utilizing the hype over Putin's alleged mass manipulation of the American electorate to hive off a $160 million amendment to the 2017 National Defense funding Act to "investigate foreign propaganda in US media." It all adds to a chilling international atmosphere, reminding of those not so good old McCarthyite days.
