Passing: Ian MacPherson
by Ana Maria Peredo - CCCBE
Dear Friends of SJS, Social Justice Activism has lost a good friend.Dr. Ana Maria Peredo, Director of the Centre for Co-operative and Community-Based Economy writes:
With great regret and sadness, I convey the news that Ian MacPherson died suddenly on the weekend. Ian was a world figure as an historian but also an activist in the world of co-operative enterprise.
He took a leading role in creating the Canadian Co-operative Association, was the co-founder of CASC (the Canadian Association for the Study of Co-operation), and chair of the International Co-operative Alliance committee that revised the co-operative principles in 1995.
Prominent among his many contributions was the founding in the year 2000 of the BC Institute for Co-operative Studies (BCICS), later re-named the Centre for Co-operative and Community-Based Economy (CCCBE). The Centre became a prime source of scholarly material as well as support for practitioners in co-operative undertaking. The BCICS/CCCBE is an arm of the mentorship that Ian so warmly and generously practised himself for those interested in learning about and advancing co-operation as a community resource. Ian’s latest initiative, under the umbrella of the Centre, was the creation of the Co-operative Initiative for Peace and Social Inclusion.
Ian will be sorely missed by many in the academic world but especially in the world of co-operation. It is expected that there will an event in the University of Victoria in the coming weeks to honour and celebrate Ian’s life and accomplishments. We will be sure to publicize the event as soon as details are known.
Regretfully
