Listen. Hear. Sophie Papp & Zain Haq talk about

Save Old Growth's Upcoming Campaign

When you donate to Save Old Growth

Your donations help us to set up new groups in new cities and towns across the province. To get the government to act, people need to take action in organized groups throughout BC. Your money goes towards mobilization, training, set up and the materials needed for a new group to be ready to take action in their town.

- Old Growth forests are one of the greatest on land carbon sinks (1)

- We are facing the destruction of our society, economy and the further loss of lives in the face of the climate crisis (2)

- 85% of of British Columbians want action to protect Old Growth forests (3)

- Only 2.7% of British Columbia's old growth forests remain (4)

We are demanding the provincial government to stop stalling and keep to their word, this cannot wait.

Pass legislation to immediately end all old growth logging in the province of BC.

Writing letters, signing petitions and rallies have failed to stop the destruction. Save Old Growth uses heavily researched historical tactics of traditional civil disobedience to get the government to act.

Join us in non-violent civil resistance to create meaningful and lasting change.

“Climate change is a threat to human well-being and planetary health. Any further delay in concerted anticipatory global action on adaptation and mitigation will miss a brief and rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a liveable and sustainable future for all. (very high confidence).”

This is the latest report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - 27 February 2022.

Donate now to grow the campaign and end the destruction.

A little bit of context

Old growth forests are extremely valuable and must be protected. These trees exceed the age of 120 years, but on Vancouver Island, they are more commonly 400-800 years old or more.

They are a vital part of a healthy ecosystem, filling essential roles such as wildlife habitat, carbon storage, and species diversity. Old growth forests also provide protection from wild-fires and reduce the risk and severity of floods and landslides.

But there’s a problem

Due to decades of clear cutting and unsustainable logging practices, currently legal and unrestricted in British Columbia, only 2.7% of old growth is left. This is not only a horrific loss for the ecosystems and the identity of "Beautiful British Columbia, it is yet another failure by the Canadian government to take real action against the terrifying consequences of climate change.

Here’s what we’re doing about it

Save Old Growth is a nonviolent civil resistance campaign that goes further than the normal realm of activism you may be familiar with.

This campaign draws on tactics, lessons and elements of successful traditional civil disobedience movements to demand the government to listen to our demand:

To pass legislation to immediately end all old growth logging in the province of BC.

Ordinary citizens are engaging in non-violent civil resistance by blocking the Trans-Canada highway multiple times per week. This mass disruption pushes the issue of the continued destruction of old growth forests into the faces of the public, the media and the government.

Want to get involved?

As well as donations, you can get involved in the campaign by joining a local team in your town or city, or there are numerous volunteer opportunities that can be done from wherever you are.

Remember

We acknowledge that old growth logging and the destruction on these lands is part of a long history of capitalism and colonialism, and that these continue to cause harm to people, the environment and the wider picture of the global climate crisis.

Save Old Growth is a first step in demanding that the government listen to not only it's scientists, but also to its people, and finally take adequate climate action to result in a livable future.
