Sunny Days: Getting Past Pandemics

Coronavirus and the Sun: a Lesson from the 1918 Influenza Pandemic

by Richard Hobday - Aletho News

March 10, 2020

Fresh air, sunlight and improvised face masks seemed to work a century ago; and they might help us now.

When new, virulent diseases emerge, such SARS and Covid-19, the race begins to find new vaccines and treatments for those affected. As the current crisis unfolds, governments are enforcing quarantine and isolation, and public gatherings are being discouraged. Health officials took the same approach 100 years ago, when influenza was spreading around the world. The results were mixed. But records from the 1918 pandemic suggest one technique for dealing with influenza — little-known today — was effective. Some hard-won experience from the greatest pandemic in recorded history could help us in the weeks and months ahead.

"Journalists" Preparing the Public Mind for the Next Regime Change Challenge

International Media Uses Fake Journalist To Spread Disinformation About Nicaragua

by Nora Mitchell/Nan McCurdy - Afgj.org

March 14, 2020

On Feb. 20, 2020, Vox.com published a piece entitled “Burnt radio stations and 18-month newsprint blockades: Inside the slow culling of Nicaragua’s free press” that has multiple problems. The first of the many problems with this propaganda piece is that one of its authors – Carl David Goette Luciak – who initially came to Nicaragua to support anti-canal activists, was a close friend of the leaders of the violent opposition who were funded and directed by the US to attempt regime change.

Carl David Goette Luciak with armed opposition

Goette Luciak can be seen in multiple photos with the opposition and with their armed lackeys; one of the photos was used for the cover of the book about the attempted coup, Nicaragua 2018: Uprising or Coup? He is also captured on video taking photos of an old man being tortured by the opposition in the documentary March of the Flowers. He appears at second 13 in the video from the Flowers March which took place in Managua on June 30, 2018.

Security State of America Classifies Coronavirus Intel

US Intel Agencies Played Unsettling Role in Classified and “9/11-like” Coronavirus Response Plan

by Whitney Webb  - MintPress News

March 13, 2020

As coronavirus panic grips the world, concern over government overreach is growing given the involvement of US intelligence agencies in classified meetings for planning the U.S.’ coronavirus response.

As the COVID-19 coronavirus crisis comes to dominate headlines, little media attention has been given to the federal government’s decision to classify top-level meetings on domestic coronavirus response and lean heavily “behind the scenes” on U.S. intelligence and the Pentagon in planning for an allegedly imminent explosion of cases.

Media's Sanders Myopia: Fair Election Coverage My Eye!

Media Malfunction as Sanders Notes Positive Aspects of Latin American Socialism

by Greg Shupak - FAIR

March 6, 2020

When 60 Minutes (2/24/20) asked Sen. Bernie Sanders about his past support for aspects of Cuba’s socialist revolution, as well as for Nicaragua’s 1979–90 leftist Sandinista government, Sanders responded by saying he opposes what he described as the “authoritarian” features of the Cuban government, while noting that after the 1959 revolution, Cuba launched “a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing?”
Slate photo illustration for the article
“Sanders Has a Soft Spot for Latin American Strongmen” (2/20/19).

News organizations seemed unable to process that a major national political figure could say something positive about a socialist country, leaving these outlets flailing around in absurd ways.

MH17: The Hague Convening for Judgements Already Rendered

HOW TO MEASURE PREJUDICE – DUTCH JUDGE HENDRIK STEENHUIS DEMONSTRATES IN THE MH17 SHOW TRIAL

by John Helmer - Dances with Bears

 @bears_with

March 11, 2020

In the first two hours of the first day of the Dutch trial of allegations of murder in the shooting-down of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, Hendrik Steenhuis, the presiding judge, revealed that the judgement for Dutch court jurisdiction for the case to proceed is inevitable. He did that three months before he has scheduled a hearing on the question. Steenhuis also revealed that a judgement of guilt against the three Russian and one Ukrainian defendants is not less inevitable.

Judgements in a trial scheduled to run for at least twelve months, issued before lunch was served to the judges on their first day, are the makings of a show trial.

Getting Real: Covid Wins, Trump Decrees Travel Ban, Rich Head for Hills

The Great Unpatterning Continues. Make Sure You Take Advantage Of It.

by Caitlin Johnstone - Rogue Journalist

March 11, 2020

In an attempt to contain the Covid-19 pandemic the president of the United States has just announced a 30-day travel ban between the US and Europe, the super-rich are flying off to disaster bunkers, and the NBA has just suspended its season.

If this is the first you’re hearing of this, go ahead and read it again if you need to.

Canada's Haitian Ghosts: Petition for Documents Release Reveal Dark Truths of Treachery

Haiti petition challenges foreign policy apparatus

by Yves Engler

March 8, 2020

While it may seem to be a simple call to release documents, Solidarité Québec-Haïti’s House of Commons petition is an indictment of Canada’s entire foreign policy/media apparatus.

In my research about Canadian foreign policy I have come across no equivalent to the “Ottawa Initiative on Haiti”. In early 2003 the federal government organized a private meeting of US, French and Organization of American States officials to discuss replacing Haiti’s elected government, putting the country under UN trusteeship and re-establishing its army.

“Canada is in a time of crisis. We can’t afford to divide our efforts any longer,” Lascaris said. “I’m running to unite Canada’s left under the Green Party banner. We need a single, principled, grassroots progressive party to form government and change the direction of this country.”

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Meghan Bell, Yves Engler, Janine Bandcroft March 12, 2020

This Week on GR

by C. L. Cook - Gorilla-Radio.com

March 12, 2020

Today, as Pestilence astride its white horse stalks the World ready to scythe humanity down to size, it seems fitting we ponder our society, ourselves, and our priorities to know best what and who to save before the end of all else. Serendipitously, my first guest undertook just such a sorting task, before the dread Covid-19 cocked its ugly head into our collective consciousness, questioning the legitimacy of privilege and daring suggest meritocracy has little to do with the ordering of our social hierarchy.

Meghan Bell writes fiction and poetry, and her critical essays on wealth, capitalism, and mental health appear online at The Walrus, The Tyee, among other places, and at Passage, the "Canadian publication of thoughtful political, economic, and cultural ideas" where I found her essay, 'I Was Born Wealthy, And Know Rich People Don’t Work Harder Than You'.

Listen. Hear.

Bell is too the past publisher of Room Magazine, and co-founder of the Growing Room Literary and Arts Festival, (going on NOW through March 15th in Vancouver). Meghan is also a member of Resource Movement, a "community of young Canadians with wealth and/or class privilege working toward the redistribution of wealth, land, and power."

Meghan Bell in the first half.

And; as tax time rolls around do you find yourself wondering just what kind of government you're paying for? When it comes to foreign policy, the tribute our current Liberal government wrings from your pockets on pain of imprisonment is getting you nothing more than branch plant corporate imperialism; just as was the case with its Tory predecessors.

Yves Engler is a Montréal-based activist, essayist, and author whose articles appear at Dissident Voice, The Palestine Chronicle, Rabble.ca, and Pacific Free Press among other places. Yves is also a key organizer with Disruption Network Canada, which has mobilized activists to challenge politicians through peaceful, direct action. The latest of Engler's eleven books, 'HOU$E of MIRRORS: Justin Trudeau's Foreign Policy' questions the Liberals' progressive pretense, while challenging the persistent national delusion that Canadians are "a benevolent force in the world" despite ample evidence to the contrary.

Yves Engler and throwing stones in Canada's house of mirrors in the second half.

And; long-time Gorilla Radio contributor, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour with this week's Left Coast Events Bulletin of some of the good things to be gotten up to in and around our town in the coming week. But first, Meghan Bell assessing society and our endpoint values.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Thursday between 11-Noon Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.ca.  He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, http://www.pacificfreepress.com. Making Mincemeat of MI6 Skripal Poisoning Narrative

MI6 & BBC REVEAL OPERATION MINCEPIE – SKRIPAL BLOOD-TESTS AT SALISBURY HOSPITAL FAILED TO SHOW NERVE AGENT UNTIL PORTON DOWN ADDED IT FOR THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT TO ANNOUNCE

by John Helmer - Dances with Bears

@bears_with

March 8, 2020

In Operation MINCEMEAT, the brightest and the best of British secret intelligence available in London between January and March 1943, dressed up a corpse as a high-ranking British Army courier. He was dropped into the water off the Spanish coast, so that he would wash up for a German Army patrol to find, along with a briefcase of top-secret General Staff letters and plans. They were fakes made to fool Adolph Hitler and his military commanders about where the D-Day invasion would take place. Deceiving the enemy turned out to be a big success. The corpse belonged to a 34-year old Welshman, homeless and mentally ill, who had been taken to St. Pancras Hospital in London and treated for acute organo-phosphate poisoning. He died. He had committed suicide with rat poison.

In Operation MINCEPIE, what’s left of British secret intelligence in March 2018 dressed up two Russians – Sergei and Yulia Skripal, 66 and 33 years old respectively (lead images) – knocked them out on a bench in the middle of Salisbury, and took them to Salisbury District Hospital where they were treated for acute organo-phosphate poisoning. But they didn’t die so they have been locked up ever since. This, too, has proved to be a big success at deceiving the enemy.

Profiles in Trumpage: Why the President is Not the Brits' Cup o' Tea

British Writer Pens The Best Description Of Trump I've Read

by Nate White - found at LA Progressive:

February 15, 2019

Someone on Quora asked “Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?” Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England wrote the following response:

(Caricature of Donald Trump is by DonkeyHotey.)

A few things spring to mind.

Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.

For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed.

So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever.

What in the World? Everything Under Heaven!

Everything Under Heaven

by #SocialismorExtinction

March 6, 2020

Everything Under Heaven is a short documentary looking at the continued proliferation of antagonisms between global powers, the threat of global - even nuclear - war, and the crisis of imperialist capitalism.

Building upon the analysis put forward in our 2018 documentary, History is Marching, and our 2019 short film, An Atlantic Tide, it covers the US-China trade war, the "phase one" US-China deal, Hong Kong, the politicisation of the coronavirus, conflicts between the EU imperialist bloc and the US, Brexit, the resurgence of a Turkish colonialism, the US dollar and oil, and the US' push toward drastic escalation in the Middle-East.

Bad Influences: Surviving the Flu Media Hype

Momento Mori – Unpopular Thoughts on Corona Virus

by Craig Murray

7 Mar, 2020

I have always been very fond of this photo, for reasons which are perhaps obvious. We are left to right Celia, Stuart, Neil, Craig and throughout our childhood we really were that close and that happy. The reason that I post this now is that my mother always told me she was amazed how good we looked in the photo, because it was taken when we were all off school sick with Hong Kong flu.

The Hong Kong flu pandemic of 1968/9 was the last really serious flu pandemic to sweep the UK. They do seem extraordinarily regular – 1919, 1969 and 2020. Flu epidemics have much better punctuality than the trains (though I cheated a bit there and left out the 1958 “Asian flu”). Nowadays “Hong Kong flu” is known as H3N2. Estimates for deaths it caused worldwide vary from 1 to 4 million. In the UK it killed an estimated 80,000 people.

Defining the Parameters of Acceptable Debate: How Networks Frame American Democracy

Debate Moderators Frame Questions to Define Acceptable Politics

by Julie Hollar - FAIR

February 29, 2020

With Super Tuesday around the corner, the Democratic presidential debates are coming to a close. The debates are ostensibly an exercise in democracy, a chance for voters to evaluate candidates’ positions in order to cast a better informed vote in the nominating contest.
Moderators at the February 25, 2020, debate,
CBS’s Norah O’Donnell and Gayle King.

But a review of three of the most frequent topics of debate starkly demonstrates how media hosts use their platform less to inform voters in an evenhanded way than to define which positions—and candidates—are acceptable, and which are not.

A Mad and Monarchical Trump Subverting American Democracy

American Fuhrer—Corrupt Rampage Against Americans

by Ralph Nader - CounterPunch

March 3, 2020

Delusionary, dictatorial Donald Trump is drunk on power. Trump’s monarchical and lawless actions are a clear and present subversion of our Republic and its Constitution. As soon as the impeachment trial ended and Trump was acquitted by the Senate’s supine Republican courtiers (except for Senator Mitt Romney), vengeance flooded Trump’s fevered mind.

Ignoring warnings from his advisors, Trump is lashing out in all directions, unleashing torrents of foul-mouthed tweets. Note with alarm how this American Fuhrer is consolidating control and using his presidential power to smash all opposition. Remember that last July Trump declared “I have an Article II, where I have the right to do whatever I want as President.” He wasn’t kidding, America.

Air War: Assault on English Alt. Skripal News Site

CYBER SOLDIERS PENETRATE THE SKRIPAL CASE

by John Helmer - Dances with Bears

  @bears_with

 March 4, 2020
Cyber attacks have been launched in England to stop publication of new evidence in the Skripal case from being published this week on the second anniversary of the attack on Sergei and Yulia Skripal in Salisbury, March 4, 2018.

The targets were The Blogmire produced by Rob Slane from Salisbury, and this website produced from Moscow. The Blogmire was disabled and inaccessible to readers between last Thursday and Saturday. Then on Monday evening this site was attacked. The evidence left behind by the attackers shows they come from the same source, using the same unusual method of attack and concealment.

Facts and Fictions on Wet'suwet'en Land Defense

Wet'suwet'en: Fact Check

by Pam Palmater

March 3, 2020

Wet'suwet'en Fact Check - In this video, we fact check some of the claims that have been made by government officials, law enforcement, as industry as well as some political pundits in the mainstream media about the Wet'suwet'en and Indigenous solidarity actions.

As I have stated in my previous videos, I do not speak for the Wet'suwet'en Nation, as they have their own spokespeople. Also, any errors made in this video are my own and not that of the Wet'suwet'en peoples or Nation. Here are the links to the Unistoten and Gidimten websites where you can access their supporter tool kits and find out how you can help:

Please note that nothing in this video promotes violence on our Indigenous territories.
