The details for the event are as follows:

Hidden Histories
The title of Prof. Ra'ad's lecture will be "Decolonizing the Past and the Present in Palestine, Israel and the West". He will explain the phenomenon of self-colonization amongst the colonized and colonizers alike, as it affects such aspects as history, religion, culture, political rhetoric and education; as well as the means to overcome its symptoms and reframe perceptions. A Q&A session will follow.

Admission to this event is free; however, donations to support CJPME's work will be gratefully accepted.

Basem L. Ra'ad, Ph. D. (Toronto), was born in Jerusalem and educated in diaspora. He has written on a variety of subjects and has worked as an editor and community organizer. He was a founding member of the Arab Community Centre in Toronto more than 30 years ago. He was co-managing editor of the Palestine-Israel Journal of Politics, Economics and Culture in occupied East Jerusalem. He has taught at universities in Canada, Lebanon and Palestine, and is currently professor emeritus at Al-Quds University in occupied East Jerusalem. He has given public lectures at the University of Edinburgh, the University of California at Berkley, the London School of Economics, and The European Centre for Palestine Studies at the University of Exeter, amongst others.

Prof. Ra'ad's book, Hidden Histories: Palestine and the Eastern Mediterranean, has been described as:
  • "a brilliant tour de force of recovery, decolonization, re-vision, and inclusivity" (Hilton Obenzinger, Stanford),
  • "perhaps the first corrective history of Palestine, its people, its region and its culture" (Naseer Aruri, UMass).
  • "a study in deep time, wide space . . . an anthropology of the present" (Gayatri C. Spivak, Columbia).
Copies will be available for purchase, and Prof. Ra'ad will be happy to dedicate and sign on request.

CJPME wishes to thank our co-sponsor, the Social Justice Studies Program at UVic, for providing the venue.

Please spread the word about Prof. Ra'ad's talk. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday, the 29th.

Best regards,

Thomas Woodley
