Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Jamie Kneen, Saul Landau, Janine Bandcroft Sept. 16, 2013

This Week on GR

by C. L. Cook - Gorilla-Radio.com

What happens when a gold rush is rejected? That's what's happening in countries around the world, where the people living near, or on top of prized resources are choosing to leave the minerals in the ground, preferring to preserve the waters, wildlands, and agricultural heritage trans-national capital would undermine.

Just one such instance is the resistance to a Canadian-listed mining corporation's proposed operation in the Apuseni Mountains of western Romania.

Listen. Hear.

According to ROARMAG.org, Toronto Stock Exchange-listed Gabriel Resources' plans to open the biggest open-pit mining project in Europe which would, quote:
"[E]rase the village of Roşia Montană and four mountain tops, only to be replaced by a lake full of cyanide. [...] What will be next is a regional environmental catastrophe, with extremely high chances of toxic contamination across Romania, Hungary, the Danube River and even the Black Sea."
Jamie Kneen is Communications and Outreach Coordinator with MiningWatch Canada, a quote:
"pan-Canadian initiative supported by environmental, social justice, Aboriginal and labour organizations from across the country." There he provides "strategic support and advice for campaigns, consultation and negotiation efforts for MiningWatch members and partners." Jamie has more than twenty years experience in environmental impact assessment, mining, and indigenous rights work.
Jamie Kneen in the first half.

And; in 2001 five Cuban nationals risked their lives infiltrating US-based terrorist networks mounting operations against Cuba from Miami, where Cuban exiles boasted of attacks targeting hotels, airliners, and merchant shipping. When details of these plots was revealed to the FBI by the Cuban government, the Americans responding by arresting not the suspected terrorists, but the Cuban agents watching them!

Saul Landau died last week, but not before leaving a legacy of more than 40 films in a career most concerned with human dignity and the rights of the downtrodden. He was in Victoria last in 2011 to screen his last film, 'Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up,' which, quote:
"Chronicles half a century of hostile US-Cuba relations by telling the story of the Cuban Five, intelligence agents sent to penetrate Cuban exile terrorist groups in Miami and now serving long prison sentences."
Saul was an emeritus senior fellow at Berkeley, and is sadly missed by Cuba and all those his work touched over the decades. I spoke to Saul just prior to his appearance at UVic. Presente! Saul Landau in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV Radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us from a remote location at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with some of what's good going on on Victoria's streets and beyond. But first, Jamie Kneen and all that doesn't glitter; Romania's gold rush discontent.
