Eyewitness report from the war zone of eastern Ukraine
Friday, June 12, 7 pm to 9 pmAt: Harbour Center, 515 W Hastings St, Rm 1700
Speaker: Roger Annis
Sponsor: Institute for the Humanities, Simon Fraser University
The war in eastern Ukraine is at a crossroads. A ceasefire has been in place since February 12, 2015 but violations are frequent. The underlying political and economic issues that sparked the war are unresolved. Ukraine does not recognize or talk to the rebel, pro-autonomy movement in the east. The NATO countries are pushing a ‘blame Russia’ narrative, and three of them-the U.S., UK and Canada-have soldiers in western Ukraine providing training to the Ukrainian army. Roger Annis visited the city and region of Donetsk, Eastern Ukraine in mid-April 2015. He is an editor and writer at the website, The New Cold War: Ukraine and beyond.
