The great Canadian writer and environmentalist, Farley Mowat would have been 93 today. Sadly, Farley, author of more than thirty books, including such classics as 'A Whale for the Killing,' 'Never Cry Wolf,' and 'Sea of Slaughter' was a strident defender of the natural world, and fought to protect it to the last. He was also an inspiration to generations of Canadian environmentalists; those forming the backbone of a nascent movement out of Vancouver in the 1970's not least among them.

Rod Marining is a long-time environment defender, a co-founder of Greenpeace International, and navigator on three campaign voyages of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society vessel, Farley Mowat. He is Chair of the BC Environmental Network, Listserve manager for the Landwatch Campaign, and Coordinator for PATH, or People's Action for Threatened Habitats.

On land, Rod has accompanied the Caravan to Wet'suwet'en on its continuing journey from the lower mainland to British Columbia's contested proposed interior route of tar sands pipelines aimed at the heart of B.C.'s mid-coast.

And; last week the Joint Review Panel for the proposed Site-C dam project released its findings and recommendations to the government on the scheme that would see thousands of hectares of prime BC farmland flooded, ostensibly to provide power for the people of the province. But the panel's findings provide more questions than answers for the long contentious mega-project.

Andrea Morison is spokesperson for the PVEA, Peace Valley Environmental Association. Andrea holds a Masters of Natural Resource Management degree and has worked in the field in both Ontario and BC for more than 25 years, the last three years of which devoted to the PVEA's involvement with the environmental assessment process for Site C. Her prior experience is in the forestry, and oil and gas sectors.
