Joan lived a remarkable life devoted to creativity, learning, environmental protection, peace, and social justice. A lifelong learner and pioneer, she studied fine arts, architecture, and law at a time when few women entered those fields, and later earned a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies.
Joan was a nationally recognized environmental advocate and served as leader of the Green Party of Canada from 1997-2001. She was a co-founder of the Ecological Rights Association and the Global Compliance Research Project, and dedicated her life to promoting environmental responsibility, human rights, and ethical leadership.
Earlier in her life, Joan and John Russow, the father of her children, ran Le Hibou, the legendary Ottawa coffeehouse. Joan booked many of the performers who became important Canadian musicians and created the posters and artwork that helped define the venue's unique spirit.
Joan was also a gifted painter whose artwork was seen by only a fortunate few. She found inspiration in nature, travel, and the beauty of the world around her.
Later in life, Joan shared a loving partnership with David, who stood beside her in life and in the causes they championed together. She was predeceased by her mother Lilyan, father Ian, and David White and is lovingly remembered by her children: Maya, Lorick (Masako), Theona (Jason), and Soren (Ema); her seven granddaughters: Lily, Amelia, Anise, Sophia, Violeta, Mimi, and Sena, her brother Bruce, and her many dear friends.
A celebration of Joan's life will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. starting at her favourite swing next to Oak Bay Marina.
There will be a musical procession to Haynes Park-bringing together music, community, and nature-three things that Joan cherished deeply. Family, friends, and all whose lives Joan touched are warmly invited to gather to share stories, and celebrate her remarkable life. Joan will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
