Love Out a Window: Hind's Hall's Eponymous Inspiration

Unfurling Love from the Window

by Kathy Kelly - The Progressive

May 7, 2024

On April 30, when Columbia University student protesters took over Hamilton Hall, they renamed it “Hind’s Hall,” dropping a large banner out the windows above the building’s entrance.

A banner and a name remind student protesters for whom they are fighting.

This was a hall famously occupied by students in the 1968 protests against the Vietnam War and against Jim Crow racism in the United States. The students are risking suspension and expulsion, and a very real blacklist has already been generated against them, with Congress joining in to define criticism of genocide as a form of antisemitism that state universities and state-linked employers will not be allowed to tolerate.

I believe their love for Hind Rajab guides the movement so desperately needed to resist militarism. Hind was six years old when Israel used U.S.-supplied weapons to kill her.

If our civilization survives a looming ecological collapse that is helping to drive catastrophic nuclear brinkmanship, I hope future generations of students will study the “Hind’s Hall” occupation in the way that students of the civil rights movement have studied the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the story of Emmett Till. Hind’s story is tragically emblematic. Her cruel murder has befallen many thousands of children throughout the decades of Israel’s fight to maintain apartheid.

Just in our young century, from September 2000 to September 2023, Israel’s B’tselem organization reports that 2,309 Palestinian minors were killed by Israelis and some 145 Israeli minors were killed by Palestinians, with these numbers excluding Palestinian children dead from deliberate immiseration via blockade or traumatized as hostages in prisons. We hear reports that thirty-eight Israeli children and some 14,000 Palestinian children have been murdered since October 7, deaths which can all be laid on the doorstep of the ethnostate project so lethally determined to keep one ethnicity in undemocratic governance.

No six-year-old poses any threat to anyone. Like the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children starved to death during the U.S. imposition of economic sanctions against Iraq, none of these children could be held accountable for the actions of their government or military.

Hind Rajab committed no crime, but she was made to watch her family die and wait for death surrounded by their corpses. When the ambulance crew asked safe passage to come rescue her, she was used as bait to kill them as well. Her story must be remembered and told over and over.

As Jeffrey St. Clair writes, Hind was a little girl who liked to dress up as a princess. She lived in the neighborhood of Tel al-Hawa, an area south of Gaza City.

“Hind Rajab was in her own city when the invaders in tanks came,” St. Clair notes. “What was left of it . . . Hind’s own kindergarten, from which she’d recently graduated, had been blown up, as had so many other schools, places of learning, places of shelter and places of safety in Gaza City.”

On January 29, when the Israelis ordered people to evacuate, her mother, Wissam Hamada, and an older sibling set off on foot. Hind joined her uncle, aunt, and three cousins who traveled in a black Kia automobile.

The uncle placed a call to a relative in Germany which initiated the family’s contact with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS). After the initial connection with the PRCS switchboard, the car was targeted and hit, killing Hind’s uncle, her aunt, and two of her cousins.

Hind and her fifteen-year-old cousin, Layan, were the only survivors.

Switchboard operators handling the phone contact with Layan had immediately notified ambulance workers that the little girls needed to be rescued.

But it would have been suicidal for a rescue crew to enter the area without first working out coordinates with the Israeli military.

Similar to the World Central Kitchen workers killed on Monday, April 1, they waited hours for the coordinated rescue plan.

On the audio tape shared by the PRCS workers, Layan’s petrified voice can be heard. The tank is coming closer. She is so scared. A blast is heard and Layan no longer speaks. PRCS workers call back and Hind answers.

She pleads, “Please come and get me. I’m so scared.”

St. Clair writes, “The [PRCS] dispatched an ambulance crewed by two paramedics: Ahmed al-Madhoon and Youssef Zeino. As Ahmed and Youssef approached the Tel al-Hawa area, they reported to the Red Crescent dispatchers that the IDF was targeting them, and that snipers had pointed lasers at the ambulance. Then there was the sound of gunfire and an explosion. The line went silent.”

The tank-fired M830A1 missile remnant found nearby had been manufactured in the United States by a subsidiary of the Day and Zimmermann Corporation. Day and Zimmermann prides itself on having once received the U.S. National “Family Business of the Year” award—an Internet search for the award chiefly produces references to this company. The company states that it believes in civic and community service, with core values of safety and integrity; emphasizing their success as a team that hits its targets. But since last October, their business has been killing families like Hind’s.

Although Israel predictably insists that Layan and Hind, and the additional slain paramedics, were all lying with their final breaths and that no IDF tanks were present to attack them, Al Jazeera’s analysis of satellite images taken at midday on January 29 corroborates the victims’ accounts and puts at least three Israeli tanks just 270 meters (886 feet) from the family’s car, with their guns pointed at it.

When rescuers were finally allowed to approach the remains of Hind and her family on February 10, the car was riddled with bullet holes likely coming from more than one direction.

Hind’s mother couldn’t go to the site until February 12.

On May 5, Israel raided the offices of Al Jazeera at the Ambassador Hotel in Jerusalem and moved to shut down the television network’s operations in Israel.

To remember Hind’s story is an act of resistance. Commemorating her short life builds resolve to confront profiteers who benefit from developing, manufacturing, storing, and selling the weapons that prolong wars—robbing children of their precious right to live.

Universities should, in theory, be places to learn things of importance, and we can learn from the students of Hind Hall to throw comfort and ambition out the window while keeping hold of love, as the students clung to that banner and to the name of Hind Rajab. We can learn to keep hold of our humanity. We learn by doing, as these students are learning to do, drawing wisdom from people like Phil Berrigan who famously said, “Don’t get tired!”

The list of Gaza solidarity encampments grows each day. Conscious of increasing famine in Gaza, students at Princeton University launched a water-only fast on May 4 as they continue to call for their University to divest from corporations selling weapons to Israel. The United Nations warns of a potential collapse of aid delivery to Palestinians with Israel’s May 7 closure of the two main crossings into Gaza. These crossings are critical entry points for food, medicine, and other supplies for Gaza’s 2.3 million people. The disruptions come at a time when officials say northern Gaza is experiencing a “full-blown famine.”

With thousands of innocent lives in the balance, promoters of peace should take advantage of this crucial opportunity to follow the young people, learning alongside the students whose hunger for humanity reveals stunning courage.

The Gaza genocide is accelerated. Now at the gates of the southern city of Rafah, heavy bombing over the weekend, described by refugees of Israel’s seven-plus months-long razing of the walled enclave as the most intense experienced yet. As hundreds of America’s largest bombs rained on the estimated one and a half million Palestinians driven into Rafah, the Israeli military bombed too areas in north and central Gaza, where many have returned to the ruins of their homes, after finding no safety in the south. Protest against Israel’s blatant criminality has come from every quarter of international governance, and on the streets of cities and college campuses around the World; and yet the slaughter continues.

Dave Lindorff is an Izzy Award-winning investigative journalist, author, founder of the web news site, This Can’t Be Happening, and co-producer of the documentary, ‘A Compassionate Spy’. The film tells the tale of Ted Hall, wunderkind physicist and spy who may well have saved Russia and the World from nuclear conflagration, and it’s the subject of Lindorff’s companion book for the film, ‘Spy for No Country’. Dave’s latest article at This Can’t Be Happening covering America’s reaction to the Gaza Genocide is, ‘The Protesters on the Nation’s Campuses are Winning!’

Dave Lindorff in the first half.

And; the late American poet, Maya Angelou famously said, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” In Canada’s case, behind its liberal-humanist rhetoric what it has shown time and again is a ruthless devotion to capitalist ventures at home and abroad. Whether bankrolling the laying of pipelines over the lands and bodies of indigenous resistance in British Columbia, or vouchsafing the corporate plunder of Asia, Africa, South America, and the Caribbean, Canada consistently reveals itself; and you can believe the people in those places trod underfoot know what they’re looking at, even if Canadians largely don’t see it.

Viviana Herrera is Latin America Program Coordinator for MiningWatch Canada, and what they’re looking at right now is the “Surging violence surrounding Canadian mining projects in Ecuador“, and ongoing free trade talks between the two countries underway.

Viviana Herrera and watching Canada’s efforts to set up a new Investor State Dispute Settlements with Ecuador in the second half.

But first, Dave Lindorff and the “draconian tactics of corrupt and gutless college leaders to try and shut down protests against Israeli genocide in Gaza”.

After rejecting a ceasefire agreement, Israel increased its bombing of the southern Gaza city of Rafah Monday night. In the small hours Tuesday, the eastern section of the border town was leafleted, then heavily bombed, while the crossing with Egypt, the only avenue of escape, was seized, with twenty people there reportedly being executed by the Israeli army. Whether or not this bodes the long-promised ground invasion of the city, where more than a million and a half Palestinian civilians have fled over the course of the now seven months-long genocide campaign, is difficult to determine; bombing civilians is one thing, but facing the waiting soldiers of Gaza’s resistance is quite another.

Laith Marouf is the Palestinian-Canadian founder of FreePalestine.Video. The long-time multimedia consultant and producer is currently chronicling the Palestine disaster from is base in Beirut. Free Palestine Video says it’s meant to fill a “large gap” and provide coverage, “…in the absence of media supporting the resistance forces in the English language due to the ban in the West.”

Laith Marouf and the next stage in an epochal struggle for the future.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Voices in the Crowd, Terry Wolfwood May Day, 2024

This Week on GR

by C.L. Cook - Gorilla-Radio.com

May Day, 2024

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded April 25th and May 1st, 2024

Listen. Hear.

Happy May Day! In times of yore, in the northern hemisphere, the May Day heralded Winter’s finality and the coming of Spring proper. No frosts would come to kill seeds to soon planted, or make perish younglings in the nest. For youngsters now, “May Day” as heard may first evoke panic of a Mayday! Mayday! that since 1927 has been recognized as the universal signal of distress. As international raconteur, and frequent guest on Gorilla Radio, John Helmer, (from whom this introduction is inspired) reminds, the distressful element of the Mayday derives from the French, “M’aidez”, literally “help me!” It’s a call emanating now across the World for the people of Gaza that is being answered with blunt force by authorities in the countries in support of Israel’s ongoing genocide in Palestine; a genocide promising to become a 21st Century Holocaust.

In the first half, local voices becoming a part of the global barricade to stop the slaughter and to free finally Palestine.

And; as well as genocide in Gaza, and so far less virulent attacks against freedom of speech and thought at American universities, Israel is too targeting the Palestinian culture, hunting down and killing its journalists, authors, and poets. Fascists have always feared artists and their ability to stir within our hearts aspirations for a more beautiful world, and have always tried and failed to quash that spirit; and in their attempts they reveal themselves and their vile philosophy to be the enemy of what’s best about us, and what’s best about being alive.

Terry Wolfwood is the Director and co-founder of the Barnard-Boecker Centre Foundation. She’s served as local coordinator for the Victoria chapter of Women in Black for many years, and has traveled numerous times to the refugee camps in Palestine and Western Sahara to bear witness to those suffering injustice, and to bring the message of the people she meets there back to Canada. Terry is too a poet and author; her articles have appeared at Briarpatch, Peace News, and Third World Resurgence among other places. Her poetry can be found at the Foundation’s site, BBCF.ca, and in her recently released second anthology, ‘Passion and Commitment’, published by Smallberry Press.

Terry Wolfwood and a life of passionate existence, love, (art) and resistance in the second half.

But first, Palestine’s message from Victoria to the World.

Last week, the United States surprised no-one in using its veto power in the United Nations Security Council to stymie again Palestine’s hopes of recognition as a full member state. In killing the resolution – a reiteration of another aborted by that body in 2011 – America said, “This vote does not reflect opposition to Palestinian statehood, but instead is an acknowledgment that it will only come from direct negotiations between the parties.” That presumably an allusion to Israel, the UN member state currently waging a widely acknowledged genocide across Palestine’s remnant historical territories.

John B. Quigley is Professor emeritus of international law at Ohio State University’s Moritz College of Law, whose numerous publications include books on international jurisprudence, and articles on human rights, the United Nations, war and peace, east European law, African law, and the Arab-Israeli conflict. In his book, ‘The Statehood of Palestine: International Law in the MIddle East Conflict’ Quigley argues the state of Palestine was extant before Israel’s creation, and remains so despite any subsequent “permutation” to its territory.

Some of Quigley’s other titles include, ‘The Case for Palestine: An International Law Perspective’, ‘Palestinian Crisis Best Understood Under International Law’, ‘International Law and the Palestinian Refugees’, ‘The Genocide Convention: An International Law Analysis’, and ‘The Statehood of Palestine’ among many others.

John B. Quigley in the first half.

And; following the UN Security Council’s quashing of the full membership resolution for Palestine, an emboldened Israel accelerated its genocide campaign against the captive Gaza; and though famine and disease threaten, and the entire Strip is being subject to land, sea and air bombardment, the international community has proven yet unable to either stop the onslaught, or get adequate food and other aid to the people there. But not everyone is waiting for the UN, or “international community” to act.

Activist, journalist, and lawyer, Dimitri Lascaris has joined the Gaza Freedom Flotilla 2024 in Turkiye, where the three ship strong contingent has expedited its departure to “meet the profound and urgent needs of Gaza’s civilian population”. But there are forces exerting pressure to prevent the ships sailing, (as no doubt there will be the same trying to arrest the completion of their humanitarian mission).

Dimitri’s articles and recent video reports from the Middle East are available at his site, DimitriLascaris.org, and his interviews for TRNN can be found at TheRealNews.com.

Dimitri Lascaris taking to the high seas in defense of Palestine in the second half.

But first, John Quigley and the making of the State of Palestine now as it’s ever been, again.

In the Fall of 2020, amid the fear and confusion of Covid, British Columbia’s minority NDP government called a snap election. It was controversial then as much for coming barely two years into the mandate, as drawing voters together at the height of the pandemic. But, there was more electoral controversy to come. A “McCarthyite” campaign to undermined the leader of one of the province’s political parties slithered by, ultimately knocking him and his party out of the election.

Stuart Parker describes himself as a “Canadian political exile”. Living in Tanzania now, Parker left Canada last year after suffering a “three-year campaign of neo-McCarthyite blacklisting.” He has a long history of political and environmental activism in B.C. and Ontario, and was, before being chased out, the acting leader of the nascent B.C. Ecosocialist Party. Stuart’s recently released a compendium of his prodigious writings in the four-volume, ‘Collected Essays 2008-2024‘.

Stuart Parker in the first half.

And; the last two weeks the World has been on tenterhooks, not knowing how Iran would react to Israel’s April Fool’s rocket attack against the Iranian Embassy in Damascus. Now that we know; what will Israel do next?!

There’s amazing developments in this story; too numerous and changing too rapidly to keep up with in a brief introduction like this. But suffice to say; we’re entering an Age of Trepidity where each next step could spell a disastrous fall.

John Helmer’s a journalist and author who’s spent decades living in and reporting from Russia. He’s the principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears, and has too been a professor of political science, sociology, and journalism and served as advisor to governments at the highest levels.

Among his many book titles are: ‘Skripal in Prison,’ ‘The Man Who Knows Too Much About Russia,’ ‘The Lie That Shot Down MH-17’, ‘SOVCOMPLOT: How Pirates Tried to Capture the Treasure of the Russian Seas, and Were Caught Out’, and his lately released autobiography, ‘Dunce Upon a Time: A Life of Mistakes’. Over the weekend Israel announced a withdrawal of troops from Gaza, leaving only a brigade along the recently created divide in the centre of the Strip. It says the retreat, or retrenchment, is a temporary measure in preparation for the long-threatened ground invasion of Rafah. Meanwhile, one refugee now able to return to the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis – site of a major battle last week – reports her city in ruins, saying “There isn’t a house without a martyr, wounded, or destroyed.”

Laith Marouf is the Palestinian-Canadian founder of FreePalestine.Video. The long-time multimedia consultant and producer is currently chronicling the Palestine disaster from his base in Beirut. Free Palestine Video says it’s meant to fill a “large gap” in media coverage, “…in the absence of media supporting the resistance forces in the English language due to the ban in the West.”

Laith Marouf in the first half.

And; there’s no knowing if Israel’s destruction of Iran’s Damascus Embassy last week inspired Ecuador’s infamous violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations over the weekend, but the storming of the Mexican Embassy in that country and kidnapping of Ecuador’s former Vice President and asylee, Jorge Glas certainly reiterates the erosion of International Law.

Glas, who served in Raphael Correa’s administration and was convicted for corruption, says charges against him are politically motivated. He’d been in the Embassy since December, and was promised safe passage out of the country last week. Mexico’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador blasted the Noboa administration for the breach, saying the arrest of Glas constitutes an “authoritarian act” and is a “flagrant violation of international law and sovereignty of Mexico”.

Joe Emersberger is a Canadian-Ecuadorian engineer, journalist, and co-author with Justin Podur of the book, ‘Extraordinary Threat: The US Empire, the Media and 20 Years of Coup Attempts in Venezuela‘. Over the weekend Palestinians marked Land Day, the annual March 30th commemoration of six civilians murdered by Israeli soldiers while protesting expropriation of their homes and property in 1976. In Toronto, demonstrations were held Saturday in conjunction with those calling for a cessation to Israel’s ongoing violence, already deemed tantamount to genocide by court findings at the International Court of Justice, and ordered stopped in the UN Security Council.

The protest in Toronto proceeded much as the many preceding it had, until Toronto Police Services decided to escalate. By the end, 7 had been detained, three ultimately charged, and policing in “Toronto the Good” once again proving it ain’t so much so.

But, should we be surprised that the cops in Toronto behave like the politicians in Ottawa – and the presses everywhere in the country – unfairly serving and protecting the interests of Israel? Afterall, it’s a Canadian tradition. As Canadian author, Yves Engler says of his 2010 book, ‘Canada and Israel: Building Apartheid’, “Liberal and Conservative governments, usually with support from the NDP, have staunchly backed Israel since before its creation.”

Yves Engler is a Montreal-based political activist and the author of thirteen books, mostly detailing the dark dealings of Canada’s foreign policy elite, including the aforementioned. His latest, co-authored with Owen Schalk, is ‘Canada’s Long Fight Against Democracy’, which Yves is currently touring across Canada. He’s also a prolific essayist, whose writing appears across the internet and at his website, YvesEngler.com, where I found his recent piece, ‘Gaza the final nail in “Canada as honest broker” coffin’.

Yves Engler in the first half.

And; last week, America’s media Wurlitzer concerted in replaying a favourite from its propaganda song book. The ‘Havana Syndrome Hustle’, for those not tuned to Spook Radio, was the one about the mysterious illness allegedly suffered by American diplomats in Cuba, (and sympathetically experienced by their Canadian colleagues). Safe to say, the re-release was received with crickets from the critics, but any distraction is a welcome one for American intelligence these days.

But, it’s not all clownery in Washington, DC where former “Counterterrorizism Czar” under George W. Bush rose again last week to be named head of the NED. Covert Action Magazine has, for those unfamiliar with the Beltway players, published a program entry on the National Endowment for Democracy’s new number one, Juan Zarate.

Jeremy Kuzmarov is a journalist and author who also serves as Managing Editor at CAM. Jeremy’s book titles include, ‘Obama’s Unending Wars’, and ‘The Russians Are Coming, Again’, written with John Marciano, and his latest, ‘Warmonger. How Clinton’s Malign Foreign Policy Launched the U.S. Trajectory From Bush II to Biden’. His recent article at CAM is, ‘CIA Cutout Appoints Counterterrorism Czar Who Supported Massive Human Rights Abuses’.

Jeremy Kuzmarov and Spook World not so golden oldies reprised at Foggy Bottom in the second half.

But first, Yves Engler on Toronto’s protest policing, Foreign Minister, Melanie “Genocide” Joly’s public meltdown, and Israel’s escalation through bombing of the Iranian Embassy in Damascus.

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded March 27th, 2024

Russia held its presidential elections ten days ago, and if you haven’t heard, incumbent candidate, Vladimir Putin won reelection. At least that’s what they’re saying in the Russian press. On this side of the Atlantic however, America (and by default its Euro-allies) filled the week after with stories of the fix being in, trying to convince their viewers and readers the man with the 80+ percent approval rating had figuratively defenestrated opposition voters to steal the win, etcetera, etcetera, blah, blah, blah.

But that was before the terror attack in Moscow that claimed 139 lives at last count, and wounded hundreds more.

Dan Kovalik was in Russia for the vote, acting as an election observer. It’s something he has a lot of experience in, having performed that function many times in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Colombia. Dan’s a lawyer, educator, labour, peace, and justice activist, democracy defender, journalist, author, and filmmaker. His book titles include: ‘Cancel This Book: The Progressive Case Against Cancel Culture’ the “Plot to” series on American efforts to undermine the governments and economies of Iran, Venezuela, and Russia, ‘No More War: How the West Violates International Law by Using ‘Humanitarian’ Intervention to Advance Economic and Strategic Interest’, ‘Nicaragua: A History of US Intervention & Resistance’. His latest is, ‘The Case for Palestine: Why It Matters and Why You Should Care’ due out in May.

Dan Kovalik in the first half.

And; as stated, the horror in the Crocus City Hall music venue has quashed the Western fake news campaign to delegitimize Putin’s election, and now looks to effect the nature of the two-plus years war between Russia and Ukraine.

John Helmer’s a journalist and author who’s spent decades living in and reporting from Russia. He’s the principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears, and has too been a professor of political science, sociology, and journalism and served as advisor to governments at the highest levels.

Hollywood Bread: Words Left Unsaid

Hollywood Bread

by David Rovics

March 22, 2024

In principle, I still agree with Noam Chomsky on most everything.  Half the time these days when I see his name mentioned in some social media thread, it's to criticize him for his perceived disinterest in getting to the bottom of various events, such as the assassination of JFK or the 9/11 attacks.

Listen. Hear.

I still agree with Chomsky's basic orientation on these questions, and have long been parroting it myself.

It goes something like this:  whoever committed various acts like these, the big problem we face is capitalism and empire, and that's what desperately needs to change, regardless of whatever nefarious activities intelligence agencies or terrorist networks are up to.

Eight years ago, however, I had a personal experience which, though it didn't change my basic orientation politically in terms of the problems with capitalism and empire or the kind of country and world I yearn to live in, it did make me hone right in to the particular cataclysmic, world-shifting mass murder event that took place in multiple locations in the eastern US on September 11th, 2001.  It raised questions that seem to be very simple as well as very disturbing and exceedingly urgent, but which also seem to have no answers.

Eight years ago I got an email from an old friend who I hadn't been in touch with for many years.  One of the reasons we had been out of touch for so long was because for years he was in touch with no one, in fear for his life, basically living underground.  He wrote me a long email, catching me up on what had happened, particularly during the year, 2001.

Eight years ago, when I reconnected with my old friend, I published an anonymized version of his email to me on my blog, with his permission.  In 2022, I wrote and recorded a song called "Hollywood Bread."  Yesterday I received a rocking remix of the song from Chet Gardiner's studio in Hawai'i.  So this song will be another one on the upcoming album, which will be titled Bearing Witness.  On the occasion of the remix -- and on the occasion of the Israeli military very actively committing genocide, under explicit directions from Israeli leadership, while the western media engages in holocaust denial -- I thought I'd revisit that email I got back in 2016.

The details I would highlight, and the questions I would ask, are pretty much all in the song -- which is a long one, especially by my normally more punk rock standards of brevity.

In Hollywood, Florida, there used to be a building, since demolished, called Hollywood Bread.  My friend had an office on the 9th floor.

The 10th floor was off-limits, though it used to be accessible.  The janitor of the building, who still was able to access the 10th floor but wasn't supposed to, was mysteriously found dead in the elevator on the 10th floor.  They said he was drunk and had an accident, but my friend said he knew the janitor, and the man never drank alcohol.

My friend shared the 9th floor with other businesses, mostly staffed by Israelis.  They had a lot of fancy IT equipment, but they said they were a moving company.  The staff often didn't seem to know they worked for a moving company, and had to be reminded on occasion.

The smoking area outside of the building was a smoking area shared by other nearby buildings, including one where a man named Mohammed Atta worked.  Mohammed smoked a lot, and often was at the smoking area when my friend was taking smoke breaks, along with lots of the Israelis, who seemed to know Mohammed.

On September 11th, 2001, Mohammed Atta died, along with the other hijackers and their thousands of victims.

By September 12th, 2001, the Israelis were all gone from the Hollywood Bread building, along with all of their equipment.

My friend contacted the FBI to tell them he knew Mohammed Atta and had some other things to talk about that might potentially be of interest to them, but they were never interested in following up on this with him.

None of these facts by themselves prove anything, but they certainly raise justifiable suspicions of all kinds -- suspicions made even more suspicious by the complete lack of believable answers to any of them.

Such as:

  • why does it appear from web listings that no one had offices in the Hollywood Bread building in September, 2001, when this is evidently not true?

  • what business was operating on the 10th floor in September, 2001?

  • how did the janitor die?

  • what was the Israeli "moving company" really doing?

  • what was the relationship between the Israeli "moving company" and Mohammed Atta?

  • why did they all quickly close their offices after September 11th?

  • why was the FBI not interested in my friend's stories about all of this?

I don't know if we'll ever know the answers to any of these questions.

Some things I do know is since I posted to my blog with my friend's testimony about this stuff, the online trolls who position themselves as "antifascists" consider me a "conspiracist," which seems to be a new term for people who spread "conspiracy theories."

I also know that as soon as I posted about this, I started hearing from people about all sorts of other conspiracy theories about 9/11 and many other things.

From my decades now of experience in two particular arenas -- speaking out against Israel's crimes, and speaking out in support of imprisoned journalist, Julian Assange -- there are clear patterns in terms of the reactions I've learned to expect.

From one end there will be the voices discounting your questions on the basis of them addressing apparent conspiracies -- whether they might be conspiracies between intelligence agencies and terrorist networks to carry out, assist in, or deflect responsibility for terrorist attacks; or conspiracies between various state actors to libel, silence, and imprison a journalist.  Regardless of how much circumstantial or whatever other kind of evidence there may be pointing to an actual conspiracy, there will be many loud voices responding with attacks, to anything that gets attention.

From another end there will be those who see someone capable of believing in the outrageous, and therefore someone to share their own outrageous ideas with, ideas about other wild conspiracies involving mass murder, secret coups d'etat, or some form of world governance plot -- in some cases theories which are well-known to be true and a matter of the public record, in other cases theories which are patently completely wacky, and a whole bunch in between as well.

There is no doubt at all that both those making the accusations of "conspiracism" and those sharing news of other conspiracies are a combination of well-meaning individuals as well as people working in one of various troll farms, paid to sustain a narrative and attack those who veer from it and get any attention for doing so.  (Anyone who pays attention to me via Facebook in late February and early March can attest to the obviously organized and paid trolling activities of the pro-Israel trolls apparently unleashed on me by UK Lawyers for Israel.)

It may perhaps be possible for an investigative journalist or someone else to get past the "it's classified" response from FBI investigators to Israeli involvement in 9/11.  But it's very clear that the costs of even raising such questions can involve loss of credibility, association with wild-eyed tin-hat people, losing your job as a journalist or university professor, and not having your music played on BBC, among other consequences.

To say the least, it's a very chilling academic/intellectual environment for any serious inquiry into very serious matters.

Listen. Hear.

As dates of infamy go, March 20th is right up there. It was on this very day, twenty-one years ago, George W. Bush marched American troops into Iraq preceding the heinous “shock and awe” bombing of Baghdad. Now, even the lying media majors whose mendacity then allowed the catastrophe inflicted by Bush’s “coalition of the willing” happen, concede the attack and all that followed was based on lies – “a pack of lies” as George Galloway would thunder at US senators two years later.

So why did Bush do it, if not to neutralize Saddam Hussein’s non-existent Weapons of Mass Destruction? Perhaps the intense lobbying by Israel for the war, and ascendancy of the Neo-Con claque within the Bush White House can explain it? Two things certain, however are; those manufacturing the lies in Washington profited their infamy handsomely, and today are free to enjoy the fruits of their complicity in the murder of unknown numbers of Iraqis. And, that impunity not only made the ongoing Gaza genocide possible, but guarantees a future of unending atrocity.

Ken Stone is an activist and author working for peace with the Syria Support Movement International and Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War. His book, ‘Defiant Syria: Dispatches from the Second International Tour of Peace to Syria’ is a compilation of his dispatches from his 2016 visit. Ken and the Hamilton Coalition have been in the fore of Canadian resistance to militarism for years, and that activity has increased since October of last year.

Ken Stone and Gaza foremost in the first half.

And; none were surprised Vladimir Putin won an overwhelming mandate to continue in the office of the President in Russia over the weekend, but to hear the Anglo-American media reports, that entirely predictable event is merely a “claim” being made by the Kremlin. Famine: Israel's Gaza WMD

When Starvation is the Weapon, the Harvest is Shame

by Kathy Kelly - World BEYOND War

March 14, 2024

In a work entitled “Irish Famine 4,” Palestinian-American journalist and artist Sam Husseini combined grass and paint to commemorate a bitter time in Irish history when starving people died with their mouths stained green because, according to historian Christine Kinealy, their last meal was grass.

An Gorta Mór

Shamefully, British occupiers profited from exporting out of Ireland food crops so desperately needed. Over a seven year period, beginning in 1845, one million Irish people died from starvation and related diseases. It was a conscious mass killing. One of the most horrific means of execution we can read about or imagine was employed. The result, an excruciating descent into despair, delirium and bodily immobility while one’s attention, and character, is gradually reduced to extreme hunger and pain.

Now, in the occupied Gaza Strip, weapons dealers benefit from increasing military shipments to Israel. Palestinians, like the Irish, have resorted to eating mixtures of grass and animal feed. The past five months of Israeli siege, bombing, and displacement have killed more than 31,000 people – mostly women and children. The onset of famine will expand that number exponentially, particularly among children.

Human Rights Watch says the Israeli government is starving civilians as a method of warfare in the Gaza Strip. Aiding and abetting this war crime, the U.S. government has approved 100 military sales to Israel over the past five months. U.S. bullets, bombs and guns have helped prevent crucially needed aid from reaching millions of Palestinians. The bombs have buried or destroyed much of the food supplies which could have partially mitigated this horror. Continued attacks have forced vast populations to flee, huddling in the occupation force’s next target, Rafah. The United States continues providing resources and support for this genocide.

On March 11, eight U.S. senators signed a letter to President Biden insisting that ongoing weapons shipments to Israel violate U.S. laws forbidding military aid to regimes obstructing U.S. humanitarian aid.

Additionally, 25 prominent humanitarian and human rights organizations delivered a letter to the President echoing the Senators’ message.

Even as Israel faces mounting pressure from world leaders to stop attacking people in Gaza awaiting relief and stop impeding humanitarian relief shipments, Israel turned back another aid truck. The reason? The shipment included children’s medical kits with scissors useful for applying bandages or cutting away clothing to reach shrapnel.

The Israelis forbid the scissors as a potential dual use weapon. Meanwhile the United States keeps sending Israel guns and bombs which present a far greater threat.

Each day brings new reports of Palestinians, 40 percent of them children, succumbing to disease and death because they are deprived of food, fuel, clean water, medicines, and shelter. Hellish conditions worsen as infectious contamination spreads from decomposing bodies and the chemical contaminants from the shell casings of thousands upon thousands of Israeli and western-supplied bombs dropped on Gaza.

In Northampton, Massachusetts, six activists are on day three of occupying the office of Representative Jim McGovern. They are demanding he call on the president to immediately halt all weapons shipments to Israel, even if Israel allows humanitarian aid into Gaza. And they want Rep. McGovern to publicly call for the United States to stop vetoing U.N. cease-fire resolutions.

Occupiers in Rep. Jim McGovern’s office.

“These are desperate times,” says one of the occupiers, Peter Kakos. “We must call for immediate action, and nothing less.” He’s particularly mindful of 17,000 Palestinian children in Gaza who are estimated by UNICEF to be currently unaccompanied or separated from their parents.

Save the Children’s March 12, 2024 report questions what five months of carnage, flight, starvation and disease, on top of nearly 17 years of apartheid blockade, will do to the children in Gaza who survive the brutality now afflicting them.

During a recent visit to Amman, Jordan, I witnessed the anguish and frustration felt by many Palestinians denied any means of relieving the suffering of loved ones.

They had this response to photo-ops taken of U.S. aid drops.

“Are you going to feed starving people so that they can then face genocide from the Israeli Army with a full stomach?” asked my host. “What’s the logic in that? The only humanitarian thing to drop would be to drop all support for Israel’s war on the people of Gaza.”

In May of this year, an Irish NGO called AFRI (Action From Ireland) will hold an annual “famine walk ” to commemorate when hundreds of desperate people trekked in cold and stormy weather to beg mercy from British officials designated to assess who would qualify for small portions of food or tickets to enter a workhouse.

“The weather was terrible,” notes County Mayo’s official record, “with wind and hail beating down upon them. When they arrived in Delphi the Guardians refused them food or their tickets to the workhouse. Needless to say many of them perished on the return journey as fatigue and exhaustion from hunger took hold. Some of those that had energy to start the journey back to Louisburgh were swept into the lake by the heavy squalls.”

Each year, the organizers of AFRI’s famine walk focus on a place in the world afflicted by famine. “This year’s famine walk will focus on the unspeakable horrors being visited on the population of Gaza,” says AFRI’s coordinator, Joe Murray, “with ‘Irish’ President Biden forgetting his history and playing the part of a ‘Black and Tan’ in providing the means to obliterate an entire population.”

It’s heinous to ignore the plight of starving people as was done by the British relief officials in the spring of 1847. But how much crueler is it to bomb the people you are deliberately starving, forcing people to wonder if they will face a quick death or a long and tortuous one?

Yes, these are desperate times. People in the United States ought to occupy local offices of every elected official, denouncing all forms of violence, insisting on an immediate end to any support for Israel’s genocidal war against Gaza. It’s time to acknowledge the futility of war and call for a collective home to be shared by Muslims, Jews, Christians, Bahais, Druze and many others in a secular democratic state encompassing Israel and Palestine. Similarly, the elected representatives should occupy the Oval Office until the President takes action.

Sunday past marked the beginning of Ramadan, Islam’s Holy Month marking the first revelations to the prophet. There had been hope, and some hints by US president Biden, a ceasefire would be agreed, but those hopes died with Israel’s bombing of Rafah, the city harbouring more than a million and a half displaced Palestinians – survivors of Israel’s now five months-long genocide campaign.

Dimitri Lascaris is an activist, journalist, and lawyer. His interviews for TRNN are at TheRealNews.com, and his articles appear at his website, DimitriLascaris.org, where you can find the recent interviews and videos he’s produced during his “month-long trek across the Middle East.” As Hollywood celebrated itself Sunday at the Oscars, and Israel bombed the civilians of Rafah, Dimitri spent the first night of Ramadan in East Jerusalem, outside the gates to Al Aqsa Mosque.

Dimitri Lascaris in the first half.

And; there’s been an effort to paint the genocide in Gaza, (and growing pogrom in the communities of the West Bank and East Jerusalem) in the colours of a religious war. The “battle of civilizations” narrative is a familiar one; we’ve heard it variously intoned during all of the many conflicts the United States and its allies have fomented across the so-called ‘Arc of Instability’ for the last twenty years and more, and each time it’s been a lie. But to what purpose?

Dr. T.J. Coles is the director of the Plymouth Institute for Peace Research and the author of numerous books, including: ‘The War on You’, Manufacturing Terrorism’, ‘Capitalism and Coronavirus: How Institutionalized Greed Turned a Crisis into a Catastrophe ‘, ‘Biofascism: The Tech-Pharma Complex and the End of Democracy’, among others. His essays can be found at CounterPunch, where his recent piece, ‘The New Atheism at 20: How An Intellectual Movement Exploited Rationalism to Promote War‘ appears.

His latest book is, ‘The New Atheism Hoax: Exposing the Politics of Dawkins, Dennett, Harris, and Hitchens’ an indictment of both the weaponization of that “philosophical genre, which argues for secularism over organized religion” and its most famous literary proponents, the so-called “Four Horsemen”.

T.J. Coles and the Four Horsemen of the modern apocalypse in the second half.

But first, Dimitri Lascaris in the middle of the Middle East.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Andy Worthington, Yipeng Ge March 6, 2024

This Week on GR

March 6, 2024

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded March 2nd & 6th, 2024

Last month, Julian Assange’s final appeal to avert extradition to the United States was heard over two days in a British court. Now Assange and the millions of his supporters around the globe wait for that court’s decision. To call his detention, approaching five years in maximum security under the harshest conditions allowed by English law, a miscarriage of justice hardly addresses the produndity of the perversion of the principles of Magna Carta, that foundational precept of Western jurisprudence.

Andy Worthington is an English journalist, activist, author, photo-historian, filmmaker, musician, song-writer and principle of The Four Fathers band. He and the Fathers have released a new tribute song to the Belmarsh Prison’s most famous inmate, ‘Warriors’. Andy’s is too co-founder of the Close Guantánamo campaign, still trying to get released men captives of George W. Bush’s “generational war”.

Gorilla Radio is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

His book titles include: ‘The Guantánamo Files: The Stories of the 774 Detainees in America’s Illegal Prison’, ‘Stonehenge: Celebration and Subversion’, and ‘The Battle of the Beanfield’. Andy’s articles appear at his website, AndyWorthington.co.uk, where he invites participants to enjoin Close Guantanamo’s efforts.

Andy Worthington in the first half.

And; the horrors in Gaza intensify by the moment. This past week, the World witnessed the infamous targeting of starving civilians gathered by some of the few aid trucks allowed in by Israel southwest of Gaza City. The Flour Massacre, as this infamy is now being called, claimed at least 112 lives outright, with more than 750 people wounded to varying degrees. Small beer when counted against the tens of thousands killed in Palestine, hundreds of thousands injured, and more than a million and a half people rendered homeless in this purposefully made humanitarian catastrophe, and undeniable genocide. And yet, those in Canada calling for an end to the killing are being assailed by the government, attacked in the media, and in true McCarthyite fashion, blackballed from their professions.

Dr. Yipeng Ge is one of these. A family practice doctor and resident physician in Public Health and Preventive Medicine at the University of Ottawa’s faculty of medicine, Ge was suspended in November for social media posts criticizing Israel and calling for a ceasefire.

The University subsequently backed down, giving indications of rescinding that suspension, but Ge refused to return saying, “I feel incredibly harmed by this process, and I don’t know how to continue within this institution because of what’s happened.” Ge too resigned his membership on the Canadian Medical Association board in protest of that institution’s silence on the targeting of hospitals, doctors, and the entire medical system there.

Since, Dr. Ge traveled to Gaza to see for himself and ostensibly work at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis, but was unable to do so due to “targeted attacks on healthcare workers” in that place.

Yipeng Ge and bearing witness in Gaza in the second half.

But first, Andy Worthington and fighting for justice for truth warrior, Julian Assange.

Song: Warriors

Artist: The Four Fathers
