Nanaimo Marks International Day of Action Against the Trans-Pacific Partnership

International Day of Action Against the Trans-Pacific Partnership

by Council of Canadians

The Mid Island chapter of the Council of Canadians is taking part in the Intercontinental Day of Action against the Trans-Pacific Partnership, NAFTA and Corporate Globalization

On January 31, members of the Mid Island chapter of the Council of Canadians will be joining with people in communities across Canada, the United States and Mexico and taking to the streets for an Intercontinental Day of Action against unfair trade deals.

Nanaimo Rally against the Trans Pacific Partnership

4:00P.M Friday January 31, 2014

Maffeo Sutton International Flags – Corner of Terminal Ave. & Comox Rd.

The purpose is to raise awareness about the damaging effects of the now 20-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), a deal that not only hurt workers and farmers, but also created new rules for international investment. There are currently $2.5 billion in NAFTA investment lawsuits against the Canadian government for public policies that protect consumers, workers and the environment.

NAFTA paved the way for other deals, including the looming Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a 12-nation free trade and corporate rights deal being pushed by the United States.

The TPP has been called NAFTA on steroids. Only two of twenty-six TPP chapters have anything to do with trade, the rest constrain what governments can regulate, extend copyright and patents and restrict the internet. The Day of Action will focus on these and other so-called "trade" deals that allow corporations to challenge public policies and environmental regulations that infringe on corporate profits.

In Nanaimo people will be bringing signs and banners for a Burma Shave style protest at the corner of Terminal Avenue and Comox Rd. The rally will begin at 4:00 P.M. at the international flags in Maffeo Sutton park at the intersection.
