BC Extends Mining Code Review Deadline for Public Comment

Hi all; in case you are unaware, today’s deadline [Sept. 15, 2015] to submit comments for BC's Mining Code review has been extended for a month with a new deadline of Oct. 16th. (See info below).

Although it appears as though they’ve also portioned out the comments to have one focus on Tailings and the other on Health, Safety and Reclamation…

Code Review

Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett has appointed a Code Review Committee, pursuant to section 34 of the Mines Act, that will determine how best to implement the seven recommendations stemming from an Independent Expert Engineering Panel’s investigation into the Aug. 4, 2014 tailings pond breach at the Mount Polley Mine.

The Code Review Committee will be chaired by the Chief Inspector of Mines and includes an equal number of representatives nominated by First Nations, mine labour unions and industry. The review will consist of three separate committees: an overarching Code Review Committee and two sub-committees that will provide technical reviews for the tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and the Health and Safety sections of the code.

The public will have the opportunity to provide written submissions on implementing the independent panel’s recommendations to the Code Review Committee. Written comments will be forwarded to the Code Review Committee for consideration.

The public submission period on Tailings Technical Review is now open and has been extended to October 16, 2015. Written comments can be emailed to CodeReview@gov.bc.ca

A second public submission period regarding the Health and Safety portion of the Code Review will be held in the future.
