This Week on GR

Nearly two weeks ago, America's House of Representatives passed H.R.5732, or the "Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act of 2016". Slipped through an almost empty House, using "special" rules that limited normal democratic checks and balances, H.R.5732 promises to be, if it gets past the Senate and is ratified by the next president of the United States, the opening of a gate to broaden the Syria conflagration in the Middle East and perhaps lead to wars beyond there too.
Listen. Hear.
James Carden is a contributing writer at The Nation whose recent article there, 'The Dangerous and Shortsighted Push to "Contain Iran"' outlines what could prove to be president Trump's first foreign policy crisis. James also serves as editor of eastwestaccord.com, the website for The American Committee for East-West Accord.
James Carden in the first half.
And; you may recall Bill C-51? That was the odious effort of our previous and unlamentedly passed prime minister to create, in emulation of our neighbours south, a Made in Canada Patriot Act. During last year's federal election, the NDP said C-51 should be scrapped, while the Liberals thought a bit of tinkering would do the trick. Right now, the Liberal's Public Safety Review on Bill C-51 is ready to retire to the capital to present submissions, BUT you still have two more weeks to get your opinions registered.
Joan Russow is former leader of the Green Party of Canada who, since stepping down from the Greens, has spent her time keeping the United Nations' feet to fire with the Global Compliance Research Project, worked as reporter and filmmaker recording climate change conferences in Copenhagen and Cancun, and producing the film, 'Cooperatives: Counterpoint to Capitalism.' She also serves as an editor and the driving force behind the Peace, Earth, and Justice news site, PEJNews.com.
Joan Russow and C-51 in the second half.
And; Victoria Street Newz publisher emeritus, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us news of some of the good goings on planned in the coming week for the streets of our town and further afield. But first, James Carden and the Caesar Syria Civil Protection Act 2016, "Dangerous and Shortsighted Push to ‘Contain Iran.’"
