The Nobel Committee last week announced this year’s Peace Prize recipient. British odds-maker, Ladbrokes touted Donald Trump as a 5/2 joint favourite to win the once prestigious medal; but perhaps the American president’s celebration of ocean-going lanchas being blown to pieces by the US Navy dampened his chances?
Instead, the Committee decided on the next worse choice, María Corina Machado. The woman who would be kingmaker in Venezuela’s last election has called for the violent overthrow of the government for years, (including an open call to the United States to invade).
Proving irony alive and well, the Oslo imperialists explain their pick, saying “When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognise courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist.”
For her part, Machado gainsaid the Norwegians, dedicating her prize to the one who “really deserves it”, Donald Trump. Goodnight Irene!
Chris Gilbert is professor of political studies at the Universidad Bolivariana de Venezuela in Caracas. He’s too an author and contributing editor at Monthly Review, and co-hosts the Marxist educational program, Esceula de Cuadros. Gilbert’s lastest book is, ‘Commune or Nothing! Venezuela’s Communal Movement and Its Socialist Project’.

And; the second Trump presidency has not disappointed those believing he’d be the end of America, ushering in the last days of the Superpower’s democratic pretensions. As of writing, ICE “brown shirts” are running rough-shod over citizen and non-citizen alike, even as (red) State National Guard units patrol resistance in “liberal” cities like Chicago, Portland, and New York.
