Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded August 13th, 2025.

Israel murdered an entire Palestinian crew of reporters Sunday past. The Al Jazeera team had been reporting from Gaza throughout the horrors visited there by the rogue state, abetted by we in the West; and though the murders are part of a pattern of targeted killings - the five being among 269 journalists killed, as of writing, since October, 2023, (in many cases along with family members) - the murders of Anas al-Sharif and his four colleagues looms more ominous both because of al-Sharif's prominence and the commencing military assault against the civilian survivors in Gaza City and the northern Strip.

Andy Worthington's an English journalist, activist, author, photo-historian, filmmaker, musician, song-writer and principle of The Four Fathers band. Andy is too a co-founder of the ongoing Close Guantánamo campaign. His book titles include: ‘The Guantánamo Files: The Stories of the 774 Detainees in America’s Illegal Prison’, ‘Stonehenge: Celebration and Subversion’, and ‘The Battle of the Beanfield. Andy's articles appear at: AndyWorthington.co.uk, where I found his latest, 'Israel Murders Anas Al-Sharif to Create a Media Blackout For Its Imminent Annihilation of Gaza City'.

Today, Andy Worthington and Israel's accelerated atrocity.

The most urgent time for a hero is always now; but that doesn't always mean a new hero. Sometimes it's necessary to rediscover those whose requisite characteristics: the expertise, moral courage, and commitment to sacrifice for a larger cause, can serve to inspire others to again enjoin a struggle for the better World we want for ourselves and our future.

Pitasanna Shanmugathas is a third-year University of Windsor Faculty of Law student who too holds an advanced PoliSci degree. He's the creator of the acclaimed documentary film series, 'Truth to the Powerless: An Investigation into Canada's Foreign Policy', and serves as Senior Editor for Long Form Content at the Jurist News. Pitasanna's latest film, Neelan: Unsilenced is freshly out, and chronicles the life and achievements of Neelan Tiruchelvam, a hero of Sri Lanka's struggle to build a just and inclusive constitution.

Pitasanna Shanmugathas in the first half.

And; Canada's previous federal Liberal administration promised to stay the flow of arms and other war materiel dealings with international scofflaw Israel. Those promises were recently revealed to have been lies; lies the current federal Liberal administration insists on reiterating, despite the evidence Canada has never stopped aiding Israel in its genocide of the Palestinian people in Gaza, and the ongoing pogrom in the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territories. More shamefully than this perhaps is the silent acquiescence to this complicity by the near entirety of our Canadian Parliament.

Alex Tyrrell is the long-time leader of the Green Party of Quebec. An activist and ecosocialist, Alex also hosts the bilingual Youtube podcast show, La Mentalité Verte, or The Eco Mindset and contributes essays to a variety of publications in French and English, in print and online. He's been a loud and constant critic of Canada's political and institutional cooperation with Israel, including the recent Carney announcement his government would "recognize a disarmed Palestine."

Alex Tyrrell and that other Green virtue: Peace in the second half.

But first, Pitasanna Shanmugathas and hearing Neelan Tiruchelvam again.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, John Zada, John Helmer July 30, 2025

This Week on GR

Long before Donald Trump's invocation of media as "fake news" the Press was recognized as being bought, biased, and interested less in objective truths than the objectives of whomever was footing the bills. It was to counter this correct public skepticism publisher Joseph Pulitzer founded and funded a School of Journalism at Columbia University, inaugurating the now-famous Pulitzer Prize.

But simply burnishing the Yellow Press hasn't removed the tarnish of partisan propaganda masquerading as honest reporting. And, just as Pulitzer's and his contemporary, Randolph Hearst's headlines are credited with stoking - if not starting - the Spanish-American War more than a century ago, today's media lies and half-truths allow wars based on false premises commence, and perpetual ones smoulder on.

John Zada is an author and journalist who worked many years at CBC Television News. He's worked in over two dozen countries as a journalist - including in the Middle East - filing for the Toronto Star, Globe & Mail, Al Arabiya, Al Jazeera English, and BBC online, among others. John's book titles are: 'In the Valleys of the Noble Beyond: In Search of the Sasquatch', which he describes as a "travelogue investigating Sasquatch reports in small coastal communities in British Columbia", and 'Veils of Distortion: How the News Media Warps our Minds'.

John Zada in the first half.

And; European Union Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen announced Sunday the preliminary agreement of a trade deal between the EU and the United States that would see the Europeans serve their essentials to the Americans while saying "danka" for the privilege.

Continental stocks sunk along with the Euro on the news of what Trump called "the biggest deal ever made", and left member-nations a-scramble to frame national responses. It's the second financial shock visited against NATO-aligned European countries in the past month, following the US-run "defence" organization's demand members raise contributions to 5% of respective GDPs - or roughly 20% of domestic budgets - for military spending.

John Helmer's a journalist and author who’s spent decades living in and reporting from Russia. He’s the principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears and has - as well as serving as advisor to governments at the highest level - too been a professor of political science, sociology, and journalism. Among Helmer's many book titles are: ‘The Man Who Knows Too Much About Russia,’ ‘The Lie That Shot Down MH-17', ‘Skripal in Prison,’ and the recently released Skripal sequel, 'LONG LIVE NOVICHOK! The British Poison that Fooled the World'.

John's recent article at Dances with Bears, ‘WHEN NEGOTIATION FAILS, TRY BRIBERY; WHEN THAT FAILS TRY EXTORTION; WHEN THAT FAILS, FORCE’ chronicles Donald Trump's bully European weekend in Aberdeen.

John Helmer and Europe rendering unto Caesar what is Caesar's in the second half.

But first, John Zada minding the media warp.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Dave Lindorff Stand Alone July 23, 2025

This Week on GR

by C.L. Cook - GRadio.Substack.com

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded July 23rd, 2025

In France, Germany, and Britain citizens with the temerity to stand in solidarity with the benighted people of Palestine - currently objects of Israel's 21st Century Holocaust - are targets of law enforcement. Online cell phone videos depicting the brutality are rife; the latest featuring para-militarized police descending on their compatriots from teens to octogenarians. Some of the goon squad violence is pathological; deserving legal action itself. But among these three, (certainly not the only jurisdictions where even timorous expressions of dissent are ruthlessly stomped) Britain really stands out.

There, where Palestine is concerned, Free Speech is officially eradicated through the deployment of Section 12 of the UK's Terrorism Act 2000. That means voicing support for the non-violent protest collective, Palestine Action, recently proscribed a "terrorist organization" can have you facing a 14 year penalty. But you needed chant, or sing, or carry a placard to be charged; merely waving a copy of printed newspaper containing the the offensive word combination is enough - as one unhappy bloke discovered this week past.

Dave Lindorff is an Izzy Award-winning investigative journalist, author, and founder of the web news site, This Can’t Be Happening. Dave's book titles include: ''This Can't Be Happening! Resisting the Disintegration of American Democracy,' 'Marketplace Medicine: The Rise of the For Profit Hospital Chains,' 'Killing Time: An Investigation into the Death Row Case of Mumia Abu-Jamal,' and his latest, 'Spy for No Country: The story of Ted Hall, the teenage atomic spy who may have saved the world'.

Dave's latest articles at This Can't Be Happening's Substack site, 'Britain Quits the ‘Free World’' and 'Keeping it Honest as US Slides into Fascist Dystopia' offer a glimpse of liberal democracy's Transatlantic end times.

Today, Dave Lindorff and last call for Western Civilization.

Gorilla Radio with Chris Cook, Yves Engler, Dan Kovalik July 16, 2025

This Week on GR

by C.L.Cook - GRadio.Substack.com

July 16, 2025

Welcome to Gorilla Radio, recorded July 16th, 2025.

Following a quarter century of wars and preparation for more of the same disillusionment with what can now only be ironically called Western Civilization has never been greater. Tears in our societal fabric once visible only to those scholars and critics and watchers confined to the margins have grown into great rents, obvious to all but the most obtuse, (or those too invested in a rotten status quo to recognize their peril).

The last two years of Israel's genocide cum 21st Century Holocaust have quickened the unraveling, as the established order has colluded with the destruction of Palestine. In Canada all parties in Parliament have supported the carnage, enabling it continue while allowing arms merchants profit by it - as seen throughout the NATO countries. Here and in those places, instead of observing and applying international law, national Powers have turned against those calling out the criminals.

Yves Engler's an activist and author, disruptor, parent and practitioner of political conscience. Yves' written a dozen books and countless essays detailing Canada's long history of perfidious foreign policies. His interventions with public officials are legendary, as is his stalwart defence of the universal principles of humaneness. Now, Yves is taking the battle further, announcing last week his challenge for the vacant seat at the head of the New Democratic Party.

Yves Engler in the first half.

And; the Hague Group convened in Bogotá, Colombia yesterday. The alliance of 30-odd countries is meeting to formulate what "concrete actions" it can take to curb Israel's genocide of Palestinians. This initiative follows the utter failure of the United Nations and its concomitant judicial appendages to bring an end to the slaughter of civilians seen daily for the past 21 months and more. America and its NATO claque are predictably hostile, with the U.S. promising terrible retribution to come for Hague Group members.

Dan Kovalik’s a lawyer, educator, labour, peace, and justice activist, democracy defender, journalist, author, and filmmaker. Dan represented unions whose membership were targeted by Colombia's far right death squads, and has been to the country to witness both elections, and the transformative - if still fragile - peace process that has emerged there in the last few years.

Dan’s book titles include: ‘Cancel This Book: The Progressive Case Against Cancel Culture’, ‘No More War: How the West Violates International Law by Using ‘Humanitarian’ Intervention to Advance Economic and Strategic Interest’, ‘The Case for Palestine: Why It Matters and Why You Should Care’, and 'The Plot to Attack Iran: How the CIA and the Deep State Have Conspired to Vilify Iran'.

Dan Kovalik and the Hague Group filling the justice gap for Palestine in the second half.

But first, Yves Engler's fight to lead a revival of Canada's remnant left.

'Talk and Log' is a negotiating tactic British Columbians fighting the erasure of ancient forests here know well. Simultaneously, nearly everyone in B.C. too agrees, open-net, sea-based salmon farms are a bad idea; bad for the ocean, bad for the wild salmon, bad for the forest. Canada's exhaustive 2012 Cohen Commission findings concurred, and said the farms should be phased out as soon as was practical. There's been a lot more talk in the thirteen years since, and the farms are still here.

Don Staniford is a self-described “Extreme Activist” and “Kayak Vigilante” who has campaigned against toxic salmon pharms for 25 years - he's currently Director of $camon $cotland and Global Director of the Real Salmon Farming Resistance. More than a dozen years ago, the Englishman lived here in B.C., and campaigned ferociously then for an end to the salmon phactories polluting our waters.

Don Staniford in the first half.

And; Canada's new prime minister, Mark Carney announced from the NATO meetings held in The Hague last month our country would devote our labours to more than doubling the amount Canadians dedicate to military related expenditures, as per the alliance's dictum. NATO would have all members do the same, to the tune of 5% of respective nations' GDP. That would mean multiple thousands of dollars extra exacted from every man, woman, and child every year to be directed to war-fighting and the preparation for more of the same.

Paul Robinson is a professor in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa, and author of numerous books on Russian history, military history, defence policy, and military ethics. His essays are published at Canadian Dimensions, where I found his recent article, 'The Empty Case for Canada's 5% Defence Pledge'.

Paul Robinson and trying to find reason in NATO's demand its member's double their military tribute in the second half.

As difficult as it is to discern the worst of Israel's litany of crimes against humanity committed in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iran over the last 22 months: whether the destruction of vital infrastructure, the targeting of engineers, doctors, professors, artists and poets in their offices and at home with their families, or perhaps the designed famine in Gaza - the nadir of this descent into madness for me has been the so-called Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, or GHF and its Hunger Games-style baiting and murder of the sick and starving. It is a crime without precedent.

Dr. Dorotéa Gucciardo is the Director of Development for Glia Equal Care and leads Glia.org's Open Gaza Initiative project. She's a literal eyewitness to the Gaza genocide, and member of EyeWitnessGaza, a coalition of health professionals, aid workers, community leaders and others who are calling out policy makers and the media for their failures to reveal and demand an end to Israel's genocide in Gaza. Dorotéa and other members of EyeWitnessGaza held a press conference last Friday in Ottawa to again urge this country, Canada act to stop the killing.

Dorotéa Gucciardo in the first half.

And; if you can make sense of what's happening between Israel and Iran you're a better geopolitical analyst than me. If you can't then you're in luck because I've just such a person appearing in the second half.

John Helmer's a journalist and author who’s spent decades living in and reporting from Russia. He’s the principle behind the web news site, Dances with Bears and has - as well as serving as advisor to governments at the highest level - too been a professor of political science, sociology, and journalism. The British Poison that Fooled the World'.

John's recent article at Dances with Bears, '“CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE!” IN ROPE-A-DOPE STRATEGY, THE BELL ALSO SOUNDS FOR REST PERIODS' bravely sallies forth into the breach of both Western media narratives and Donald Trump's cognitive -and dictive - "capabilities".

John Helmer trying to make it make sense in the second half.

But first, Dr. Dorotéa Gucciardo and doing more than witnessing the Gaza Genocide.

Iran is under attack. Just as in Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, the people of that ancient land are now under the bombs and rockets of Israel and its Western accomplices.

We've seen the modus operandi repeated: destruction of vital civilian institutions and infrastructure; targeting and murder of the professional class, whether at work or at home. The criminality of this monstrous assault is beyond question; the actions of the assailants indefensible. And yet it continues day after day, city after city, crime after bloody crime.

Dan Kovalik’s a lawyer, educator, labour, peace, and justice activist, democracy defender, journalist, author, and filmmaker. Over the last several months Dan has been in Syria and Lebanon - countries now hardly recognizable - and before that he visited Iran. All to see firsthand who the people behind the Western propaganda curtain really are, and to bring their stories home to America.

Dan Kovalik in the first half.

And; though less than the horrors inflicted upon the women, men, and children of West Asia, there is fear, and brutality being visited against refugees, immigrants - both documented and otherwise - and the American citizens defending the rights and liberties guaranteed until recently by the US Constitution. They're discovering the hard way, this Trump administration holds the laws of its own land in the same contempt as those of the rest of the World.

Andy's articles appear at: AndyWorthington.co.uk, where I found his latest, 'The Alarming Kafkaesque Basis of Trump’s “War on Migrants”'.

Andy Worthington asking not for whom America's bell tolls in the second half.

Donald Trump promised Hell for "illegals" if reelected, and now he's delivering - in Los Angeles at least. Another plank in the Trump platform was to bully and bludgeon neighbouring countries into adopting U.S. border measures - measures more familiar perhaps to the despotic regimes of distant history - now made new again if not so great in America.

And so it is the Canadian government is following the Trump lead, though newly-minted PM Mark Carney denies his Bill C-2, or "Strong Borders Act" is doing that - but says Bill C-2 will "strengthen our laws and keep Canadians safe...".

Critics however charge C-2 is a front door to tyranny restricting asylum claims, targeting immigration status in select cases, and promising to make life in Canada anything but safe for migrants of every stripe.

Pitasanna Shanmugathas is a Senior Editor for Jurist News. The third-year University of Windsor Faculty of Law student too holds an advanced PoliSci degree, and is creator of the acclaimed documentary film series, 'Truth to the Powerless: An Investigation into Canada's Foreign Policy. His latest article at Jurist News is, 'Canadian Minister Anandasangaree’s Border Bill Constitutes a Vicious Assault on Immigrant Rights'.

Pitasanna Shanmugathas in the first half.

And; is it safe to talk about Covid yet? As much as we might like to forget all about what happened just a few short years ago; is it all right now to remember the fear, upheaval, pitting of friends, co-workers, family and loved ones against one another in a fight over an invisible threat - or non-threat - to civilization itself? Five years later, can we finally talk about Covid19?

Debbie Lerman is a retired medical writer and Fellow at the Brownstone Institute whose focus has been the societal and global trends instigating and contributing to the Covid catastrophe. Her research and many articles written for Brownstone has culminated in her newly released book, 'The Deep State Goes Viral: Pandemic Planning and the Covid Coup'.

Last month, for the third time ever, the third English King named Charles addressed personally the Speech from the Throne to commence a new Canadian government. In it His Royal Highness stressed the importance of independence to his forefathers' former colonial subjects - still subjects in law - and the necessity for their undying vigilance in its defense. Last week, in a demonstration of his independence of the King's speech, (or perhaps just poor listening skills) the Canadian Prime Minister suggested a willingness to go along with America's new military industrial-strength treasury-siphoning Golden Dome missile defense scheme. Something Donald Trump promises at a reduced price to Canadians, if they so choose to become his special #51.

Yves Engler is a Canadian journalist, author, and activist. He's written thirteen books on and about Canada and its perfidious foreign policy; the latest being 'Canada’s Long Fight Against Democracy'. Yves was recently out of the country, a brief sojourn away from home to better hone perhaps his appreciation of the absurdity that is Canada in the silly Summer of 2025.

Yves Engler in the first half.

And; over the weekend, the University of Victoria hosted the 1st Vancouver Island Anti-Fascist Youth & Student Congress. The Congress was convened they say, because of the urgent need of response the threats at home and abroad to "peace, human rights, and to the environment".

Tyson Riel Strandlund is Secretary to the Popular Democracy Movement and served as media liaison for the event that offered, "an array of community leaders and experts... discussing various ‘expressions’ and aspects of fascism, ranging from militarism and war, zionism, colonialism and neocolonialism, to fascist ideology."

Tyson Strandlund and Anti-Fascist Youth raising the Red and Black in Victoria in the second half.

In the shadow cast by Israel's modern Holocaust in Gaza, Palestinian's in the West Bank are subject to a daily pogrom carried out by both the government and its "settlers". Hundreds are dead, and thousands disappeared through so-called 'administrative detention' measures; denied charge, trial dates, and held incommunicado. All this while suffering sadistic abuse.

The Palestinian Prisoners Society says as of April 17th's Palestinian Prisoner's Day, a date coinciding with an "...escalation of the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, and implementing of more systematic violations and crimes..." nearly 8,000 from the West Bank and Jerusalem are currently held captive, including women and children; all subject to "physical and sexual abuse [as] cited by Amnesty International and the United Nations Human Rights Council."

Salam Hamdan is a Palestinian political activist and Social-Feminist from Ramallah in Occupied Palestine's West Bank. She's currently in Canada.

Salam Hamdan in the first half.

And; across Africa, and far beyond too, Burkina Faso is in the news. Now the Sahel region nation is part of the greatest liberation struggle against Western imperialism the continent has seen in five centuries. Led by interim leader, Capt. Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina and neighbouring Mali and Niger broke from ECOWAS to form the AES, or Alliance of Sahel States, a devoutly Pan-African bloc determined to wrest military and economic control of the so-called "Coup Belt" countries from foreign domination.

But, is Traoré the second coming of revolutionary Thomas Sankara - and his allies the true harbingers of the long-awaited African renaissance his supporters contend - or just another iteration of power-hungry pretenders, as their critics charge?

Claude Gatebuke is Executive Director and co-Founder of the African Great Lakes Action Network, or AGLAN. Claude is a survivor of the prelude to and aftermath of the Rwandan Genocide of the early 1990's and is co-author of the book 'Survivors Uncensored 100+ testimonies from survivors of the Rwandan Genocide'.

And welcome to Summer's prelude in Canada, when the Sun's promise of scorching days to come lay ill-disguised behind the last of the Arctic chill, as wheeling migrant birds fill blue-becoming skies. Now too is the time itinerant buskers, balladeers, troubadors and trobairitz tune their travel plans and settle bookings for the hay-making season peeking just over the horizon.

David Rovics is just such a one readying for the road, (though perversely an antipodean Winter's sojourn). But that suits to a tee the contrarian instincts of a social critic who, while treading the plank of multitudinous stages and wearing out rugs at home concerts from here to Timbuktu, has too found the time to write countless essays on a wide breadth of topics examining and trying the logic of life in these our strange times.

David Rovics in the first half.

And; Canada's recent federal election returned a minority government, the third in the last four polls. Despite the stalemate though, this election was not short of high drama and stunning reversals; reversals that portend nation-changing developments perhaps in the near future. Besides three (and a half) of contending party leaders losing their home riding seats, the greatest twist in the electoral plot is the rout of the perennially third place finishing New Democrats, (and incidental erasure of the Green Party of Canada).

Alex Tyrrell is leader of the Quebec Green Party. He's a long-time critic of the federal Green's leader, cum co-leader, Elizabeth May, (the last Green standing in the Parliament). Tyrrell says, of the Green Party of Canada's many mistakes, "...changes they made to the party’s worldviews did not resonate with anyone."

Alex Tyrrell and Whither the Green agenda in Canada? in the second half.

But first, David Rovics and Musical Travelogues past and to come.
